Lakewood, N.J. - After snaring an early 1-0 advantage, Georgian Court University yielded a pair of unanswered goals to visiting Dominican College as the Lady Chargers escaped with a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's soccer action.
The setback, which marked the Lions' first conference competition of the season, drops GCU's record to 1-5 (0-1 CACC). Dominican remains unblemished in conference play at 2-0 (2-4 overall).
The day started promising for the home team, striking first at 11:50 when
Haley Pignatelli found the back of the net for the second time in as many games as the Division I transfer one-timed a
Krystal Hund cross for the tally. The lead would hold until late in the first half (43:38) whenÂ
Alyana Gonel (R-Fr.-Teaneck, N.J.) ripped in the rebound of her initial shot to record her fourth goal on the year, and knot the score at 1-all just 1:22 before the intermission.
That stalemate would be snapped in dramatic fashion at 72:42 as
Isabella Wysocki (Fr.-Rahway, N.J.) stunned the Lions with a 40-plus yard blast of a free kick that sizzled into the top right of the frame, providing the Chargers with what would be the eventual game-winner. The goal marked the second of the campaign for the Dominican standout.
The victors dominated the shots column, 24-4, with a 7-3 cushion on frame. Dominican, coming into the match with an all-time record of 10-31-1 vs. Georgian Court, now owns a modest two game winning streak vs. the Lions. It marks only the fourth time DC has collected back-to-back triumphs over GCU since 1990, and represents its first two-game winning streak in the series since recording a pair of 4-0 shutouts vs. its conference rival in 2004 and 2005.
Georgian Court remains home for its next action as the Lions welcome Jefferson to campus Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. for another CACC contest.
