LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Oct. 1, 2022) - Georgian Court Men's Soccer played Post University even through the first 39 minutes of a rainy, and chilly afternoon. A late goal from a bad bounce and three second-half goals was too much for the Lions to overcome in their 4-0 loss to Post University.
How it Happened
• The wind and rain may have impacted the number of scoring opportunities. The Eagles finished with 13 shots to the Lions 11.
• Not many shots found their way on net, just five for Post and three for GCU.
• Corner kicks played a major factor with the Eagles taking 11 of them and Post five.
• Post was carded late in the first half and called for nine fouls. GCU was called for 10 fouls, eight in the first 45.
• In the early going Georgian Court was controlling play. They had two shots and three corner kicks in the first 10:23 but couldn't get anything on the net.
• The teams kept trying to connect for long passes despite the strong winds which led to turnovers and lots of play in the middle of the field.
• In the 24th minute
Mikey Mallon had a chance at the top of the box, but his shot went off a Post leg and out behind the goal line for a corner kick.
• Off the corner, GCU's
Sam Thombs pushed one towards the net, but Soren Jensen made the save and we remained scoreless.
• With just six minutes remaining in the half, Post broke through.
Ryan Lee's clearance attempt deflected off a teammate and right to Nicholas Anagnostiad who took a step, shot low and hard and passed GCU keeper
Sotirios Gkosdis.
• Post had a couple more opportunities as the half was winding down but after 45 minutes, it was 1-0 Eagles.
• Twice in the first five minutes of half number two the Lions nearly found the equalizer. First it was
Sam Thombs who ripped an absolute rocket that stayed true on net, but right at Jensen who made the save.
• Less than a minute later,
Noah Hamouda found himself one on one with Jensen. He tried to go left off his right foot and pushed it wide of the net.
• While the Lions missed on their opportunities, Post did not. A blocked shot led to an Eagle corner kick and Carles Aliberch's service found Arnau Fabrega who headed it past Gkosdis for a 2-0 lead at the 55 minute mark.
• That was the story of the second half. Post scored three times from corner kicks. Aliberch the service each time. Twenty minutes after Fabrega, Davide Mazza a header from Aliberch made it 3-0. And with 12 minutes left it was Aliberch again. This time to Stephen Spowson for the final goal of the match.
