RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Oct. 1, 2022) - Playing three tight sets, Georgian Court Women's Volleyball didn't crack and picked up each set on their way to a 3-0 sweep of Felician on the road. Two of three sets were determined by the minimum two points as GCU won by scores 25-23, 25-17, 27-25. The Lions are now 7-9 overall and 3-3 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• Georgian Court led in all categories, scoring 55 points to the Golden Falcons 40. The Lions landed 39 kills and put back 10 blocks. Felician only scored 33 kills and two blocks.Â
• GCU was up to task defensively not just with 10 blocks but also 73 digs. Four different Lions reached double-figure digs.
• On the serve, GCU picked up one more service ace, 6-5, but also one more service error, 7-6.
• Felician scored the first three points of the match, but was quickly answered by three straight from GCU. After Felician reclaimed a 5-3 lead, the Lions roared back with five straight points for an 8-5 lead.
• It looked like the Lions were on their way to a set one win up five, 19-14, but Felician scored seven straight points, siding out with a GCU service error and then getting three aces of their own and three kills. Now behind 21-19, it was the Lions turn for a run. They scored four straight for a 23-21 lead. Felician tied the match up at 23 but a kill from
Nylene Mateo and a Golden Falcon attack error gave the Lions the set one win.
• Set two started off with both teams trading points. Tied at 10 the Lions rattled off four straight points for a 14-10 lead. They never trailed again and consecutive Golden Falcon errors ended the set 25-17.
• The third set looked very similar to the first. Trailing 4-2 at the outset, Georgian Court went on an 8-0 run for what looked like a comfortable lead, 10-4.
• Still ahead by four, 19-15, GCU rattled off four straight for their largest lead of the set, 19-11 and seemed to be in command.
• With the Lions ahead 20-13 Felician made their run. They scored nine unanswered points and claimed a 22-20 lead. Twice Felician held set point only for
Ava Venneri to tie things with kills.
