Lions Tripped Up by Chargers

WEST HAVEN, CT (Oct. 18, 2022) - Georgian Court Volleyball played their final nonconference match of the season Tuesday night in Connecticut. Playing against New Haven, the Lions fell in straight sets 25-11, 25-17, 25-17.

How it Happened
• Georgian Court hit more errors than kills, 20-19, for a negative hitting percentage. New Haven meanwhile hit .312 for the match with 44 kills.
• The Chargers doubled up the Lions on service aces, 10-5, and blocks, 8-3. 
• Defensively, GCU averaged less than 10 digs per set while UNH averaged 12.3. 
• The Lions never led in set one as New Haven scored the first four points of the match. The Chargers pushed their lead all the way to 10, 15-5, and continued to pour it on. The Lions scored two straight facing set point to get to double-digits, but dropped the opener 25-11.
• Set two saw the Lions start out hot. They raced out to a 5-1 lead and led but as much as five, 8-3. But a 7-2 Charger run tied the set at 10-apiece and the Lions never led again. UNH pushed their lead to a set-high nine, 21-12, following back-to-back aces and a kill. A 4-1 run brought GCU within six, 22-16, but they got no closer as two more kills and an ace put the set away 25-17.
• Georgian Court came back from a 5-1 deficit all the way to tie, 5-5, but the Chargers responded with another 6-1 run to jump ahead 11-6 and never trailed again. Consecutive Alexa Houston service aces made it a four-point game, 19-15, but the Chargers closed with a 4-2 run to take the set and the match.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Ava Venneri landed a team-best eight kills on 30 attempts.
• Dayna Diaz chipped in with four kills, seven assists, six digs and a block.
• Iciar Zayas matched Diaz with seven assists and six digs.
• Jessica Sprankle had a team-best eight digs
• Alexa Houston scored three kills and three service aces.

For the Chargers
• Emily Barry led the match with 11 kills and hit .389.
• Sophia Leon-Tabor passed out 33 assists.
• Amihan Johnson chipped in 10 kills with a .471 attack percentage.
• Macy Brown added nine kills adn eight digs.

News and Notes
• This was the Lions final nonconference match of the season. They finish the nonconference schedule with a record of 4-8.
• This was the first time all season the Lions finished a match with a negative attack percentage.
• Dayna Diaz set a career-high with six kills.
• Alexa Houston set a season-best with three service aces. She had just two all season entering the match. 
• Blessing Uchunor played her first career match with the Lions.
• The Lions one service error is their fewest in a match this season.
