Volleyball Drops Close One to Holy Family

LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Oct. 25, 2022) - Playing back at home Tuesday evening, Georgian Court Volleyball fell in straight sets to Holy Family, 3-0. All three sets were decided by a combined nine points, with sets two and three ending 25-23.

How it Happened
• One of the biggest keys to the match was the number of attack errors the Lions hit into. Georgian Court hit 11 more errors than Holy Family and had a hitting percentage of .027 while the Tigers hit .170.
• Aside from the errors, the match was evenly contested. Holy Family totaled three more kills than GCU, 33-30, but the Lions hit two more service aces, 9-7.
• The Tigers did have a distinct advantage when blocking, totaling eight and the Lions just two.
• The match started with the Tigers being assessed an administrative penalty for improper uniforms. The penalty gave Georgian Court a point before the match began. It didn't take long though for the Tigers to get the point back, scoring the first three when the ball was put in play.
• After a kill from Chelsea Ross put the Lions up 7-6, that was the last time GCU led. Holy Family scored nine straight points to take a 15-7 lead. Georgian Court responded with a 6-1 run, but it wasn't enough to overcome the hole they dug themselves. Despite GCU scoring four of the last six points, HFU was up enough to end it with a kill at 25-20.
• It was another back-and-forth start to set two. The set was tied at 16 and neither team had led by more than two points and any time during the frame. Holy Family then scored three straight to take their largest lead, 19-16.
• Still ahead by three, 22-19, Georgian Court took advantage of three Tiger miscues to tie things at 22-all. A ball-handling error gave HFU the lead back and the serve and a block and a kill closed the set, 25-23.
• The third set was all about who had the last scoring run. Holy Family started things off scoring the first three points in the match. Trailing 5-3, GCU rattled off five straight including getting three straight service aces from Nylene Mateo. Holy Family then scored five of the next six to reclaim a 10-9 lead.
• After GCU took the lead back, 11-10, Holy Family scored four straight, which was immediately followed by seven straight GCU points. This time is was Jessica Sprankle's turn to record three straight aces and GCU took an 18-14 lead.
• Trailing by just two now, 22-20, Holy Family scored three straight to retake a one-point lead, 23-22, following a block. GCU tied once again at 23, but the Tigers landed back-to-back kills to take set three and the match, 25-23.
