LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Oct. 28, 2022) - Playing in their final match of the season, Georgian Court was tasked with taking on regionally ranked Molloy at home Friday afternoon. GCU was up to the task, scoring two second half goals, both from
Rhys Cotter, to take down Molloy 2-1.
How it Happened
• In a match that featured two strong defenses and excellent goaltenders, it's no surprise that the match was low scoring.
• Georgian Court led in shots 17-10 and shots on goal, 7-6.
• Corner kicks heavily favored Molloy, 11-3, who was also called for more fouls, 14-6. GCU was booked for three yellow and one red card and Molloy was issued two yellows.
• Georgian Court had the first two shots of the match.
Mikey Mallon was blocked in front and
Sebastian Derflinger's header from a free kick went wide.
•
Sotirios Gkosdis was tested early as well, making a save in the eighth minute.
• Molloy gained possession and were set up with a pair of corner kicks. On the second, JP Rodriguez chipped it in short to Ryan Dobson who passed it to Gio Fabiano who took a shot from the top of the box to beat Gkosdis and give Molloy a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.
• Shortly after,
Oscar Jannesson nearly tied things getting a foot on the GCU corner kick, but pushed it just wide of the net.
Rhys Cotter put a shot on net in the 33rd minute but that was all GCU got off before the half came to an end, 1-0.
• Georgian Court looked to even things up early in the second half.
Francisco Corral's header just went over the cross bar in the 50th minute and Cotter's shot on net was stopped by Nick Conklu.Â
• In the 60th minute, another Cotter shot was saved by Conklu but gave Georgian Court a corner kick. Ficarotta took the kick which bounced around at the top of the box before Cotter settled it and ripped one passed Conklu to even the match at one.
• Molloy was on offense immediately following Cotter's goal. They took two shots and six corner kicks in 11 minutes including four consecutive corners, but couldn't get any of them on net.
• Molloy did have a chance in the 74th minute as JP Rodriguez was one on one with Gkosdis. He went low towards the near post and missed everything pushing it out of bounds.
• A foul by Molloy in the 87th minute set GCU up with a free kick from 12 yards out.
Rhys Cotter took the kick and beat everyone for his second goal of the game putting Georgian Court up 2-1 with under four minutes left to play.
• In the closing seconds Molloy had possession in the offensive zone. It looked as though they tied the game with just two seconds left, but prior to the shot, the ball was ruled out of bounds and a corner kick was called negating the goal. Time expired before they could attempt the corner and Georgian Court came out with the 2-1 win.
