EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 27, 2022) - Georgian Court built a 10-point halftime lead and pushed that to 15 late in the third quarter, but that lead slipped away as the offense stalled in the fourth quarter of their 62-54 loss at East Stroudsburg. The Lions falls to 2-3 on the season before the start of CACC play this week.
How it Happened
• Georgian Court shot well all around, connecting on 39% from the floor, 50% from three and 87.5% at the free throw line. They outshot the Warriors who hit on 35% from the floor, 43% from three and just 56% from the free throw line.
• Turnovers were a big part of the problem for GCU. They lost the ball 20 times which led to 20 ESU points off turnovers. The Warriors lost the ball just 13 times.
• Underneath the glass, each team grabbed 38 rebounds. The Warriors though doubled up the Lions on offense rebounds, 16-8 and scored 11 second-chance points.Â
• The Lions got out to a great start in the first quarter scoring 17 points and going 7-13 overall and 3-4 from three-point land. They scored the first five points in the game and led 17-15 after one quarter.
• Georgian Court quickly extended that in the second quarter. Their defense limited the Warriors to just six second-quarter points as ESU went 2-12 overall. Georgian Court was 5-9 overall and led by 10, 31-21 at the break.Â
• The Lions were shooting 12-22 overall and were 4-5 from three at the half.
• With 2:36 left to play in the third, Georgian Court took their largest lead, 45-30 following a
Savawn Hughes layup. From there though, GCU scored just nine points in the final 12:36 and were outscored 32-9 during that stretch.
• It started at the end of the third when the Warriors scored nine straight to close the quarter. Cassidy Saylor hit a buzzer beater to cut the lead to six, 45-39, after three.
• ESU then started the fourth scoring the first seven points and grabbed the lead for the first time since the first quarter, 46-45. The team's traded the lead a couple of times. GCU last led 52-51 following a Hughes jumper.Â
• Hughes retied the game at 54 making a pair of free throws with 2:52 left to play. Down the other way though, ESU collected an offensive rebound and buried a three from Jessica Polin for a 57-54 lead and never trailed again on their way to a 62-54 win.
It Was Over When
• The dagger came from Jessica Polin who untied the game with a three with 2:35 left. GCU didn't score the rest of the way and ESU made some free throws down the stretch for the eight-point win.
