Winter Haven, Fla. - After a letdown of a loss to Assumption College, #20 Georgian Court University rebounded to salvage a Sunday split with a 4-0 blanking of Gannon University as the Lions open The Spring Games with a 2-2 overall record.
Kaitlyn Stufft drove in all four of the Lions' runs, and
Mikayla Gilgert fired her second masterpiece to start the campaign, as Georgian Court recorded its second shutout win of the season. The GCU ace, fresh off Saturday's opening day no-hitter over the University of Bridgeport, carved up the Gannon lineup, permitting just two hits while striking out 12 (no walks) in the gem.
Gilgert (2-1) has allowed a miniscule opponent batting average of .068 over her first 14.0 innings with 19 total strikeouts.
Stufft tallied an ribbie single in the first frame, followed by a run-inducing fielder's choice in the third and a two-run long ball to left-center in the fifth. The dinger marked the sophomore's team-leading second homer of the young season.Â
After opening with a 5-2 lead after four initial frames vs. Assumption in game one, the Greyhounds (1-3) answered with six unanswered digits over the final three stanzas to dash away with 8-5 upset victory.
Haley Korsak, in her first collegiate start, received a no-decision in the circle permitting one run on two hits (1 K) over two frames.
Sarah Clancy (0-1), receiving a bulk of the action out of the bullpen, suffered the loss after yielding seven runs (5 ER) on 10 hits and a free pass (4 K) over five innings of action.
Kiara Meikle (2-for-3),
Adriana Mungo (2-for-3), and
Jadalyn Rodriguez (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 SB) each enjoyed multi-hit performances.
Elisa Lopez added a spark in the home half of the fourth as the graduate student crunched a pinch-hit three-run home run to center to break a 2-2 stalemate.
The Lions sit idle on Monday before paying a visit to Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. Tuesday evening (6pm/8pm) for a non-conference doubleheader vs. the 5-3 Tars.
