Women's Hoops Overcomes Holy Family in Overtime Thriller, 71-62, to Keep Postseason Hopes Alive

Lakewood, N.J. - Hanging on to the slimmest of postseason aspirations, Georgian Court University needed an extra five minutes to keep its dream alive as the Lions sent Holy Family University packing in overtime, 71-62, in an inspirational Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball divisional victory.

GCU, with the "must win", goes to 5-7 (8-11 overall) while the Tigers slide to 12-11 on the year (7-7 CACC).

The Lions, after ending the first half with a 33-29 cushion, extended its surplus to eight in the third frame before heading into the final period of regulation with a 48-41 advantage. The GCU lead reached a game-high nine points when a Hanna Thrainsdottir jumper made the score 50-41 Lions 17 seconds into the fourth. Holy Family proceeded to snap out of its daze and fired off a 12-2 run over the next 4:47 to overcome GCU, 53-52, with 4:51 left.

With the score knotted at 57-all, a pair of Erika Aspajo free throws provided the royal-and-gold a razor-thin, two-point lead with 1:10 on the clock. Hoping to dissipate the digits, Georgian Court would not be able to hold off the Tigers as Moe Moore (Jr.-Philadelphia, Pa.) slipped in a layup to tie the affair and send the Lions into overtime for the first time since Feb. 24, 2018 (vs. Felician).

Despite the anxious moments to make the extra session necessary, Georgian Court played it cool in OT with a dominating 12-3 showing to put the finishing touches on the program's first overtime win since Dec. 10, 2009 (77-70 vs. Chestnut Hill).

In a not so tidy contest, both teams combined for an unsightly 53 turnovers, 30 of which belonged to the victors.

Anyssa Fields highlighted the Georgian Court scoring column with her team-best 18 points (nine rebounds) as the sophomore never exited the floor on the night (45 total minutes). The aforementioned Aspajo recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 assists (three steals) in 38 minutes. Tian Addison poured in 11 points and Leighanna Lister secured a game-high 14 boards as the tandem each played 40 minutes apiece.

Moore topped the Tigers with her 18 points on the night. Lindsay Tretter (So.-Philadelphia, Pa.) and Ava Morrow (Fr.-Morgantown, Pa.) followed with 15 and 11 points, respectively, in the setback.

The Lions get right back at it on Thursday with a road visit to Felician University (7:30 p.m.). The contest is a make-up to two previous postponements vs. the Golden Falcons on both Jan. 15 and 20.
