Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University softball, making its 2022 home debut after playing its first 12 contests last week in Florida, treated the fans to a Thursday doubleheader sweep of Queens College (NY) with wins of 3-1 and 14-1 (5 inn.) over the visiting Knights (0-2).
A
Kaitlyn Stufft run-scoring double in the first inning, and a booming two-run blast off the bat of
Alaina Scimone (2nd of year) in the home half of the fifth frame, accounted for GCU's three tallies in the opening contest. Stufft (3-for-3) and Scimone (2-for-3) accounted for five of the home team's eight total hits in the win.
Sarah Clancy moves to 2-3 in the circle for the royal-and-gold as the sophomore scattered four hits (2 BB, 6 K) in the complete-game victory. Clancy saw her shutout bid go up in smoke in the top of the seventh when Queens lead-off hitter,
Cyarra Alvarado (So.-Coral Springs, Fla.), ripped a two-out solo homer to left-center for the Knights' lone run.
Emma Wimmer (Jr.-Mount Sinai, N.Y.) took the loss for QC (6.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 K).
Georgian Court pounded out five runs in both the first and fourth frames, and four more in the second, as the Lions cruised to the 14-1, five-inning finish in the night cap. Stufft, with a 2-for-3 performance, which included a screaming three-run dinger in the second inning, finishes the twin-bill going 5-for-8 with four RBI. The sophomore slugger leads the Lions with a .439 batting average (18-for-41) with four home runs and an impressive 17 RBI in 14 total games.
Scimone added a two-run double in the second game to finish the day 3-for-6 at the dish.
Kiara Meikle (3-for-3, 3 R, 3 SB, RBI), Â
Adriana Mungo (2-for-4), andÂ
Alyssa Rue (2-for-3, 2 RBI) each contributed multi-hit efforts in the game two rout. Meikle complemented her stellar offensive showing with a game-ending missile to the plate, denyingÂ
Jillian Cosme (Franklin Square, N.Y.) as the freshman attempted to tag up and score on a fly out to the GCU center-fielder.
Mikayla Gilgert (5-3) collected the win, permitting a lone hit and walk (4 K) over three innings of work.
Myaisha Kelly (Fr.-Albany, N.Y.) suffered the loss in the first start of the year for the Concordia College (NY) transfer (4.0 IP, 14 H, 14 R, 9 ER, 2 BB 2 K).
Georgian Court, now back at .500 with a 7-7 record, returns to the home diamond Friday afternoon as the Lions host Adelphi University (2-3) for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader. The day marks the first meeting between the two programs since GCU ended the Panthers' season a year ago with a 5-3 win over AU in the NCAA Division II East Regional Tournament (Manchester , N.H.) last May 21.
