GC-Rue! Shortstop's Two-Run Dinger Caps Six-Run Sixth to Salvage Non-Conference Split With Adelphi

Lakewood, N.J. - An Alyssa Rue two-run homer capped an improbable six-run sixth inning for Georgian Court University as the Lions shocked Adelphi University, 6-5, to salvage a doubleheader split with the Panthers in a thrilling Friday non-conference clash between the east region powers.

Adelphi starting pitcher, Lindsey Hibbs (So.-Brampton, Ontario), had her way with the Georgian Court lineup as the sophomore struck out 11 Lions through the first five frames. A pair of runs in the third, followed by a three-spot in the top of the sixth, provided the Panthers a seemingly-safe 5-0 cushion. The royal-and-gold offense, looking lost most of the contest, finally found its way as the Lions laced four-straight knocks to open the home half, and slice its deficit to 5-3.

Brianna Pearson (Fr.-Cheshire, Conn.) relieved Fon and promptly walked Alaina Scimone before yielding an RBI fielder's choice to pinch-hitter, Taylor Barraza. The table was now set for Rue's heroics as the sophomore clubbed what would be the game-winner over the left-field wall for her first homer of the season.

Adelphi battled back to tie the contest at 6-all in the top of the seventh, but the Lions looked to be saved by the man in the moon as the game would be halted before the contest's completion due to darkness. Because of the ruling by the men in blue, the game reverted back to the last full inning, providing GCU with the victory.

Sarah Clancy, in 3.1 innings of relief, collected the win (3-3) in the pitching circle (5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) for Georgian Court. Mikayla Gilgert, making her second start of the afternoon for the Lions, received the no-decision (2.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K).

Pearson took the loss for Adelphi.

Alyssa Herrera went 2-for-3 in the nightcap, which included a clutch single during the Lions sixth-inning rally. The opportunity almost did not come to fruition for the former All-American, but due to a dropped foul ball by the Adelphi defense, the third baseman took full advantage of the new life.

Adelphi (4-6), thanks to a two-out, three-run home run off the bat of SS Jaden Farhat (So.-Carlstadt, N.J.), snapped a 1-1 tie for the eventual 4-2 AU victory. Claire Fon (Jr.-Shrub Oak, N.Y.) secured the winning decision, going the distance (7.0 IP, 5 H 2 R, 2 ER, BB, 6 K).

Gilgert (5-4) suffered the setback in her own complete-game effort as the senior ace struck out 11 Panthers in the valiant effort (7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB).

GCU, now at 8-8 on the year, returns to the diamond Tuesday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. home doubleheader vs. Millersvillle University.
