Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University launched four home runs Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Millersville University as the Lions conclude their first home stand of 2022 winning five of six outings.
GCU (10-8) opened the day with a 6-2 victory in the opener vs. the Marauders (7-9) before sealing the night cap with a 7-4 triumph.
Trailing 1-0 after yielding an unearned run in the top of the first of game one, the royal-and-gold responded in the home half of the frame as the scalding sophomore,
Kaitlyn Stufft (2-for-3), crushed her fifth long ball of the year (a two-run shot) over the wall in right-center to put the home team ahead, 2-1. An infield single by Stufft brought in another Lions' tally in the second, providing the native of Temecula, Calif. three runs batted in in the contest, and a CACC-leading 21 ribbies on the young season.
Gabby D'Ottavio (So.-Buena, N.J.) cut the Millersville deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fifth as the designated player ripped an RBI single to left-center for the sophomore's second RBI in the game. GCU's
Taylor Barraza (2-for-3) countered in the bottom of the stanza as the sweet-swinging first baseman blasted her first dinger of the season, a three-run shot to left-center, to put the Marauders in the Lions' rearview mirror.
Kiara Meikle and
Alyssa Rue also enjoyed 2-for-3 efforts at the dish in the victory.
Mikayla Gilgert (6-4) went the distance for the positive pitching decision as the senior slinger enjoyed her second-straight (third overall) double-digit strikeout performance with 12 K's over seven innings of action (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, ER, BB, 12 K). After yielding the initial run of the game on a pair of GCU fielding gaffes, a free pass, and a hit-by-pitch, the veteran hurler promptly struck out the next to batters and induced a pop out to escape a bases-loaded, no-out jam.
Alex Schaefer (So.-Boyerstown, Pa.) drops to 3-4 with the setback (4.1 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 K).
Trailing 2-1 heading into the home half of the second inning of game two, an
Adriana Mungo three-run blast to left-center, and a Barraza run-inducing free pass, put the Lions ahead by three after two full (5-2).
Hunter Little (Sr.-Laurel, Md.) crunched a majestic solo blast to left to put Millersville back to within a pair in the third at 5-3. GCU starting pitcher,
Sarah Clancy, buckled down from that point forward as the sophomore sat down the next nine Marauders to step to the plate.
Meikle mashed a cascading two-run shot to left (2nd of year) in the fourth inning to provide some cushion at 7-3.
Clancy (4-3) went the distance in the victory (7.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, BB, 5 K) while Millersville starting hurler,
Morgan Crutcher (So.-Green Grove Springs, Fla.) suffered the loss (1.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB).
Mungo (3-for-4) fell a triple short of the cycle while
Alyssa Herrera enjoyed her first three-hit showing (3-for-4) of the season. Barraza (2-for-3, 2B) finished the day with four RBI to give the junior 11 on the year.
GCU (10-8) sits idle until Monday when the Lions open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action at Nyack College with a 2:00 p.m. twin-bill. The contests will be played at the College of Staten Island (Staten Island, N.Y.).
