Georgian Court Pushes #22 New Haven to the Limit In Epic Non-Conference Clash

Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University and #22 University of New Haven braved the elements Saturday morning and put on an epic show as the Lions and Chargers battled through a vicious wintry mix in a contest eventually won by UNH with just 00:08 remaining in regulation.

New Haven (2-0) opened the contest with a 3-0 run before the royal-and-gold countered with a four-goal spurt of its own to go ahead, 4-3, with 7:23 left in the second period. The Chargers offense dialed it up a notch and responded with a 5-0 flurry to grab back the lead and head into intermission up. 8-4.

With UNH holding on to a 10-7 advantage at the 12:21 mark of the fourth, Sabrina Chandler ripped home two unanswered tallies to put the home team to within one (10-9) with 5:20 left. Shaine Sauter proceeded to knot the score at 10-10 with just 1:24 to go as the senior collected an Alessia Matha helper and sent in the equalizer.

Having secured possession off a GCU turnover with a minute left, the Chargers were provided a golden opportunity as the visitors settled in for a free-position shot after a costly Lions' infraction with just eight ticks left. Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) took full advantage of the chance as the senior sizzled home the game-winner.

Despite the outcome, the Lions (1-6) out-shot New Haven, 26-18, and owned a six-shot cushion on frame (22-16). Georgian Court also dominated the draw control, 17-8,  as Sauter and Chandler lead the way with eight and six, respectively.

The aforementioned Skelly paced the victors with four goals and two assists. Reagan Bailey (Fr.-Cheshire, Conn.) added a hat trick while Cameryn Antler (Jr.-Hebron, Conn.) and Mary Rishmany (Gr.-Tiverton, R.I.) kicked in three points each.

Chandler dazzled for the Lions as the Jackson, N.J. native deposited five goals in the effort. Sauter (two goals, two assists) and Heather Devaney (goal, three assists) followed with four points apiece. Isabel Raimondi added two tallies and an aider while Matha shared two assists off the GCU bench.

Gabby Buscemi (So.-East Patchogue, N.Y.) collected the goalkeeping victory with 12 saves over 60:00. Alexis Hahn countered with five saves of her own for Georgian Court.

Georgian Court takes to the road this Wednesday vs. yet another nationally-ranked foe as the Lions visit #15 Mercy College at 3:00 p.m.
