Jan Phyl Village, Fla. - Mired in a season-opening slump, the deep freeze of the Georgian Court University offense showed signs of dissipating Friday as the #22 Lions posted its first doubleheader sweep of the young season with victories over the University of Charleston (3-0) and Cedarville University (7-5).
The Lions laced nine hits en route to a 3-0 tarnishing of the Golden Eagles (4-7) in the opener. GCU plated a tally in three consecutive innings as
Katie Lorenz (2-for-3, 2B) snapped the scoreless stalemate with a run-inducing ground out in the fourth frame for the freshman's first collegiate RBI.
Taylor Barraza ripped a ribbie single to the right-center gap to make it 2-0 Lions (5th-inn.) before
Jadalyn Rodriguez missed an opposite field, two-run homer by mere inches as the sophomore smashed a two-bagger off the left field fence to bring in the third-and-final score in the sixth.
Alyssa Herrera also enjoyed a 2-for-3 performance at the dish for the royal-and-gold.
Mikayla Gillgert (3-3) secured the win in the circle as the senior spun her third complete-game shutout of the trip, permitting only three hits and a pair of free passes (8 K) over seven total frames.
Danielle Bauer (Jr.-Tallahassee, Fla.) was saddled with the loss for Charleston (4-7), allowing a lone unearned run on four hits and a walk (4 K) in her 3.1 innings of action.
Georgian Court found its rhythm in the nightcap, rapping five hits in the first frame to jump out to an immediate 2-0 lead vs. Cedarville (4-3). One more run in the second, followed a quartet in the fourth, provided the Lions a seemingly-snug 7-1 surplus, which carried into the seventh-and-final frame. Not going down without a fight, the Yellow Jackets stung for four runs and five hits (and a costly GCU miscue) to chase starting pitcher,
Sarah Clancy, with one out and runners at the corners.
Lions' reliever,
Haley Korsak, entering her most pressure-filled moment as a collegian, plunked the first batter she faced to put the potential winning run on first base. Not to be frazzled, the freshman calmly induced a foul out before ringing up a backwards "K" to secure the 7-5 triumph and earn Korsak her first-career save (0.2 IP).
Clancy (1-3) collects her first win of 2022 for Georgian Court as the southpaw yielded just one earned run (5 total runs) on 11 hits (0 BB) over 6.1 innings of action (2 K).
McKenna Smith (Gr.-Clinton, Pa.), the first of four Cedarville hurlers in the contest, took the defeat (Â (1.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER).
Kaityn Stufft (2-for-4), the reigning CACC Player of the Week, brought in two runs to provide the sophomore slugger a team-leading 12 RBI in 10 games to start the year.
Kiara Meikle matched her teammate with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Barraza (1-for-4) contributed two RBI to give the junior three over the course of the day.
GCU (4-6) looks to end its trip at the .500 mark as the Lions look forward to Saturday's schedule with games slated vs. the University of Central Missouri (3:45 p.m.) and American International College (6:00 p.m.) in The Spring Games finale.
