Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University put its season-opening five-game losing streak in the rearview mirror in thrilling fashion Wednesday afternoon as the Lions held of Molloy College, 19-15, to secure the hard-fought men's lacrosse regional triumph.
Molloy opened the contest with a modest 2-0 advantage before Georgian Court unleashed the offensive fury with a 14-3 surge (which included seven unanswered goals at one point) to create a seemingly-commanding 14-5 cushion with 6:08 remaining in the third period. Not to be outdone, Molloy (2-3) turned up the heat on this drab, frigid day as the visiting Lions ran off a mighty 8-1 push of its own to slice its deficit to just a pair (15-13) at the 6:51 mark of the fourth.
GCU proved its hunger for victory as the home team outlasted its guest 4-2 the rest of the way to put a bow on the hard-fought "W".
Five Lions enjoyed multi-goal efforts in the team's largest scoring effort since netting 20 vs. Post University in last season's CACC Championship Tournament semifinals (W, 20-8).
Daniel Burnham contributed a team-high eight points with three goals and a quintet of helpers.
Michael Ventresca followed with six goals and an assist while
Nicholas Mann enjoyed a career day as the senior sent in four tallies for the royal-and-gold.
Tallen Smith (two goals, three assists) and
Ryan Rigby (two goals, two assists) deposited five and four points, respectively, on the day for GCU.
Justin Iannarone went an impressive 15-for-22 on the face-off with 14 ground balls.
Seven Molloy Lions found the back of the net, paced by
Nick Del Giorno (Gr.-Floral Park, N.Y.) and his four goals Georgian Court out-shot Molloy by a 46-36 count, including an 11-shot surplus (33-22) on frame.
Sebastian Farah earned his first collegiate win in the Georgian Court net as the senior keeper recorded three saves in his 45:00.
Christian Michaels (Fr.-Smithtown, N.Y.) took the loss despite 14 saves over 58:55 of action.
Georgian Court (1-5) heads to New England for the second-straight weekend as the Lions pay a visit to Assumption College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.Â
