Lakewood, N.J. - Georgian Court University secured a berth in the 2022 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament in emphatic fashion Saturday as the Lions dominated Dominican College, 22-5, in the regular-season finale for both squads.
The triumph not only puts GCU in the postseason, but bumps the royal-and-gold all the way up to the #3 seed in next week's tournament (hosted by Georgian Court). The Lions will take on #2 Chestnut Hill College at 3:00 p.m. this Thursday (April 28). #1 Wilmington University will battle the aforementioned DC Chargers (#4) at noon.
GCU sprinted out of the gate and never looked back as the home team opened the contest with an 8-0 advantage after the first period of action, before increasing its lead to a hefty score of 13-2 at intermission. Dominican (6-6, 3-3 CACC) never put a dent in its deficit as the Lions also owned the second half with a 9-3 showing.
Joe Zerr (five goals, assist),
Devin Bell (four goals, two assists), and
Daniel Burnham (three goals, three assists) each collected six points apiece in the rout.
Michael Ventresca (five goals) and
Tallen Smith (two goals, three assists) followed with five points each. The Lions owned the shot column, 53-34 (40-24 on frame).
The victory marks Georgian Court's largest margin of victory since winning at Felician University by a score of 26-6 back on Apr. 13, 2019.
Andrew Candino (3-2) sported a sensational showing in the GCU frame as the senior shot-stopper compiled a career-best 16 saves in his one half of work.
Georgian Court (6-10, 3-3 CACC) faced its next opponent most recently this past Wednesday in Pennsylvania, suffering a 20-10 loss to the Griffins. The programs have faced off in twice in the postseason, both CACC title games (2018, 2019), with the Lions coming out on top in both.
