Lakewood, N.J. -
Kaitlyn Stufft slammed a pair of two-run homers, and
Alyssa Herrera recorded a 4-for-4 performance and scored three runs, as Georgian Court University pocketed a 10-2, six-inning game two triumph over Caldwell University to salvage a Saturday split in a clash between the two Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball heavyweights.
With the score knotted at 2-all after one-and-half-innings of action in the nightcap, the Lions proceeded to pounce for eight unanswered tallies to secure their ninth "mercy-rule" win of the season. Stufft (2-for-4, 5 RBI), with two-run clouts in both the first and third frames, ends the afternoon with a CACC-leading 15 home runs and 57 runs-batted-in.
Taylor Barraza (2-for-2, 2B, RBI) and
Alyssa Rue (2-for-4) also recorded multi-hit performances.
Mikayla Gilgert, pitching all 13 innings for the Lions on the day, went the full six in the second contest to earn the win (19-7), permitting two runs (2 ER) on six hits in a selfless showing by the senior slinger.
Sacrifice flies in both the third and sixth innings of the opener provided the Cougars (31-7, 17-3 CACC) the only two runs they would need to nail down a thrilling 2-1 "W" in the opener. GCU's lone run came in the home half of the third when
Taylor Lipkins (2-for-3) smoked an opposite-field shot over the left-field wall, providing the freshman her first collegiate long ball.Â
Senior starting pitcher,
Mariah Culver (Owego, N.Y.) allowed six hits (BB) struck out 10 in the complete-game win for Caldwell. Gilgert (7.0 IP) permitted nine hits (2 BB) and struck out four in the first of two in her marathon afternoon.
Georgian Court (29-13, 17-3 CACC) still tied atop the CACC standings with its in-state rival, takes Sunday off before hitting the road Monday to the University of the Sciences for a 1:00 p.m. conference twin-bill.
