Lions Put Out Lightning in Four

WILMINGTON, Del. (Sept. 22, 2022) - Georgian Court Volleyball picked up a win Wednesday evening on the road. GCU went to Wilmington, Del. and handed Goldey-Beacom a 3-1 loss (25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-14).

How it Happened
• An even match offensively with both teams scoring 59 points. Goldey-Beacom landed one more kill than GCU, 45-44. 
• Both teams totaled nine service aces and GCU picked up one more block than the Lightning, 6-5.
• The biggest difference came in the number of errors. Goldey-Beacom totaled 43 errors, 14 more than Georgian Court which proved to be difference in an otherwise even match.
• Georgian Court came out on fire, ripping six kills and a service ace to take an 8-3 lead in set one. GBC rattled off four straight kills of their own and got back within two, 13-11, forcing the Lions to use a timeout. The Lions did a good job of holding a lead around five points and seemed to be in control up 23-18. A service error though started a rally for GBC who scored five straight, getting back-to-back blocks to tie the set at 23. The Lightning couldn't get the lead though. Emma Gildea stopped the run with a big solo block and Ava Venneri ended the set with a kill for GCU.
• In set two it was Goldey-Beacom's turn to take an early lead. They scored the first three points and led by as much as four, 10-6. That's when GCU stormed back with a 10-2 stretch to take a four-point lead of their own, 16-12. That lead didn't last though as just like in set one, the Lightning came all the way back to tie at 18. Leading by one, 20-19, the Lions scored the final five points of the set, taking advantage of three GBC attack errors to close it out, 25-19.
• GCU was looking for the sweep in the third set, another tightly contested frame. The score was tied at each point from 10 to 15 before the Lightning scored four straight to pull ahead 19-15. The Lions were unable to recover and GBC got on the board with a 25-18 win.
• After dropping set three, the Lions never trailed in set four. They scored the first three points and took a commanding 10-4 lead. The lead only continued to grow with the Lightning unable to mount any sort of offense. Jessica Sprankle sealed the win with a service ace, her fifth of the match. 

Lion Stat Leaders
• Ava Venneri hit .391 with 11 kills and eight digs.
• Alexa Houston matched Venneri with a team-high 11 kills.
• Amiyah Woods added eight kills along with three blocks.
• Emma Gildea chipped in seven kills and three blocks, two of them of the solo variety.
• Jessica Sprankle scored 11 points getting six kills and five service aces. She also dug up seven attacks.
• Jana Borkovic led the defense with a match-high 14 digs. She also added a pair of service aces.
• Iciar Zayas picked up a double-double with 37 assists and 13 digs.

For the Lightning
• Piper Nanouski scored a match-high 12 kills and was a dig shy of a double-double.
• Savannah Boyce was also in double-figures with 10 kills and hit .350 for the match.
• Shayla Boyce finished with nine kills and nine digs along with three blocks and three service aces.
• Autumn Spendlove passed out a match-high 40 assists.
• Claudia Camporro scooped up 14 digs.

News and Notes
• The win is the Lions seventh straight over Goldey-Beacom. Their last loss to the Lightning came in 2017. 
• Jana Borkovic surpassed 150 digs on the season.
• Jessica Sprankle took over the CACC lead in service aces. She now has 86 for her career which puts her in the top-20 in GCU history.
• The Lions hit better than .200 for the second straight match and the fifth time this season. GCU is 4-1 this season when hitting at least .200.
• Following their win Saturday, this is the first time this season GCU has won back-to-back matches.
