LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Sept. 6, 2022) - Georgian Court Volleyball started out their week Tuesday evening taking on Pace University. The Setters struck early and didn't let up, going on to defeat the Lions in straight sets 3-0 (25-15, 29-27, 25-20).
How it Happened
• The Setters had the advantage in early every statistical category. They outhit the Lions .282 to .085 with 38 kills to the Lions 36.
• Georgian Court did themselves no favors hitting into 25 attack errors while the Setters committed just nine.
• Pace also used their size to put back 14 blocks while GCU landed just six.
• The Lions stumbled right out of the gates as the Setters scored the first six points and forced a GCU timeout. The Lions got on the board following the timeout, but were unable to make a dent in the lead as the Setters went on to take the opening set 25-15.
• GCU started out stronger in set number two. They scored five of the first six points getting kills from
Iciar Zayas,
Nylene Mateo and
Emma Gildea. The Lions were still up four, 8-4, when the Setters started their comeback. They used a 10-2 run to take a four-point lead of their own, 14-10. Georgian Court didn't go down without a fight, coming back to tie at 17-all. Another Setter spurt saw them take set point, 24-21, but a kill from
Ava Venneri, block from Zayas and
Amiyah Woods and a
Jessica Sprankle service ace tied the set once again at 24. Pace had three chances to secure the set and finally did, collecting a service ace for the final point, 29-27.
• For the second straight set, GCU grabbed an early lead. This time 4-1 with service aces coming from
Jana Borkovic and
Iciar Zayas. The lead didn't last long as Pace rattled off four straight points for a 5-4 lead. The teams traded points for a bit until three straight Setter points put them ahead 11-7 and GCU used a timeout. Pace continued to extend the lead, going up by as much as seven, 21-14. The Lions started to mount a comeback, scoring four straight with a pair of kills from Venneri, but it was too little, too late as the Setters were able to weather the rally, going on to win 25-20.
