Women's Soccer Clinches Spot in CACC Tournament With Shutout Win

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Oct. 31, 2023) - Georgian Court Women's Soccer is back in the CACC Tournament! The Lions needed just a point to secure a spot, but did even better shutting out Chestnut Hill 2-0 to earn the win, three-points, and end the season on a high-note. The CACC regular season comes to a close with the Lions sporting a 4-2-5 record in conference play and finished 5-6-6 overall.

How it Happened
• The game was mostly played in the midfield without many high-chance scoring opportunities, especially early.
• The Lions managed to possess the ball for much of the game and led in shots 10-8 and shots on goal 8-4.
• Chestnut Hill needed to start the game with their backup goalkeeper Sophia Andreoli and she kept the Lions off the scoreboard for more than 80 minutes.
• The first half saw just 10 total shots without many really testing either goalkeeper.
• Georgian Court had a couple of shots early, but most coming from distance.
• Both teams were playing cautious and well defensively and after 45 minutes, neither had a point on the board.
• Almost 15 minutes into half number two, the best scoring chance came from Ashley Merizalde. A step inside the left corner of the box she ripped one going towards the far post. Andreoli made like a wide receiver and a diving, two-handed catch kept the match scoreless.
• The minutes were winding down and the teams were still chewing up the middle of the field. Not much was played in either goalbox. That changed in the 80th minute. Sophia Ridolfo caused a turnover and played it towards the Griffin net. A blocked shot caromed to Bridgette King who put home the rebound for a 1-0 Lion lead.
• Less than 30 seconds later Chestnut Hill's Elisabeth Stokes was shown a yellow card. After continuing to show her disagreement with the official, she was shown a second yellow card and CHC was playing with 10 for the final nine minutes.
• Chestnut Hill didn't get a shot off the rest of the game, but to be safe, Georgian Court added one more goal to put the game out of reach. Grace Konfederak sent a ball deep that Abby Kennelly chased down. She shot right to left from just inside the box and buried it in the upper left corner, leaving no doubt about the Lions going to the playoffs.

Lions Stat Leaders
Abby Kennelly had three shots, two on target and one in the back of the net.
