Lions Winning Streak Halted at Dominican

ORANGEBURG, NY (Nov. 4, 2023) - Georgian Court Volleyball was looking for their third straight win, but the Dominican Chargers had other ideas. In a cross-division battle, Dominican grabbed a 2-0 lead in the match, mounting a big comeback in set two. The Lions took the third and nearly stole the fourth, but Dominican held on for a 3-1 win (25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 25-22). The loss puts GCU at 13-11 this season and drops them to .500, 7-7 in the CACC.

How it Happened
• Georgian Court led the match hitting .194 to .113 with 46 kills.
• GCU also had more blocks, 10-7.
• On the serve is where Dominican did damage. They outscored the Lions by nine on the service line.
• Dig numbers were fairly even with the Chargers holding a small edge, 70-68.
Set 1
• The Lions got off to a slow start in the opening set, falling behind 4-1 and then 7-2 before calling timeout.
• GCU continued to inch their way closer. Trailing 21-16, they scored three straight to get to within two, 21-19.
• The Chargers answered with three straight of their own and took the first set 25-21. 
• GCU hit three service errors and seven attack errors in the frame.
Set 2
• The second set is the one the Lions would like to have back. Georgian Court started out hot, scoring three straight to take a 3-1 lead.
• GCU forced Dominican into five attack errors and were doubling them up, 12-6, as the Chargers needed a timeout.
• The Lions continued to pour it on and scored five straight opening up a 17-6 lead.
• From there though Dominican started to mount their comeback. They got to within seven, 17-10, by scoring four straight with three service aces as the Lions called timeout.
• After the break, the Chargers landed another three aces, cutting the lead to 17-13.
• Dominican brought the lead all the way down to one, 21-20, but the Lions seemed to rebound. They got to set point, 24-21, but couldn't close the deal.
• Another three Charger aces gave Dominican a 25-24 lead and they took a 2-0 lead in the match, 26-24, with a block.
• Dominican landed 10 total aces in the set. 
• GCU hit .393 and the Chargers .000.
Set 3
• After the teams traded points at the start, GCU took over.
• Tied at four, the Lions used a 6-3 to get ahead 10-7 as Dominican called timeout.
• The Lions added to the lead, getting ahead 18-11.
• Dominican tried for a repeat of the second set, getting to within three, 20-17.
• This time, the Lions squashed the comeback attempt and Martina Croce ended the set with a kill, 25-19, to keep the match alive.
• Georgian Court totaled 10 kills and just two attack errors, hitting .258 in the frame.
Set 4
• Dominican stormed out in the fourth set, scoring the first six points.
• The teams started traded points which wasn't of much help to the Lions as the Chargers took a 15-8 lead.
• That's when the Lions began to turn the tables. A 7-1 run brought GCU to within one, 16-15.
• On a handful of occasions the Lions were able to get to one, but they never took the lead.
• The Chargers were still up one, 23-22, when a kill and a block won the match for Dominican.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Chelsea Ross finished with a team-best 14 kills and hit .520 with five blocks.
• Martina Croce chipped in 12 kills with six digs.
• Giorgia Cappelletti finished with a 11-kill, 20-dig double-double.
• Carmen Rivera led the Lions with 24 digs.
• Dayna Diaz passed out 35 assists with three aces and six digs.

For the Chargers
• Kaitlyn Carr led the match with 15 kills.
• Elizabeth Perez helped out with nine kills on 45 swings.
• Kaeden Sanstead dished 35 assists.
• Linda Armao Peng scooped 24 digs.
• Delaney Ott hit eight service aces. 

News and Notes
• Chelsea Ross finished with a career-high 14 kills. 
• Ross also picked up her 200th career block and Amiyah Woods her 150th.
• Dayna Diaz scored her 20th career service ace. 
• Martina Croce hit 200 kills this season. 
• All-time the Lions are now 18-12 against Dominican.

Up Next
• Georgian Court is back at home Wednesday, Nov. 8 for their home final and senior night. The Lions will host Chestnut Hill with first serve at 6 p.m.
