Chargers Lead Wire-to-Wire in Win Over Lions

WEST HAVEN, CT. (Dec. 12, 2023) - Georgian Court Men's Basketball took the court for the first time in 10 days Tuesday night in Connecticut. GCU continued their nonconference portion of their schedule taking on New Haven. The Chargers never trailed, going on to defeat the Lions 92-56, dropping GCU to 1-7 on the season. 

How it Happened
• New Haven had a terrific night shooting. They hit 57% overall and 52% from three.
• The Lions hit 42% from the floor, but just 18% from three.
• Neither team was deep in foul trouble as the team's combined for just 13 free throw attempts. GCU was 3-4 and UNH 6-9.
• The Chargers had the edge rebounding, 35-28. They grabbed six offensive boards and led 6-0 in second-chance points.
• Georgian Court didn't turn the ball over much, just 12 times, but they proved costly as the Chargers scored 24 points from those turnovers. 
• New Haven scored the first 10 points in the game.
• A jumper from Kamaal Cox got the Lions on the board.
• UNH raced out to a 19-2 lead at the 13:39 mark and started 7-8 from the floor. 
• Georgian Court was never able to get it back under 10 in the first half as the Chargers led 43-21 at the break.
• UNH turned six Lion turnovers into 12 first-half points.
• In the first 20 minutes, the Chargers were 6-12 from three while the Lions were just 1-10.
• Georgian Court started the second half 6-6 inside the arc, but still struggled from outside going 1-5.
• Despite the efficiency down low, GCU still wasn't able to get stops on defense and dig into the Charger lead.
• Back-to-back-to-back three-pointers from Ethan Simmon midway through the half gave New Haven their largest lead, 74-44.
• New Haven totaled eight triples in the second half, going on to win 92-56.

Lion Stat Leaders
Taheen Braswell-Brown scored a team-high 12 points going 5-6 overall with three boards.
Kamaal Cox was 3-3 overall for six points.
Jahsan Johnson led the Lions dishing out six assists in 12 minutes. He also scored four points. 
Cameron Edmonds was also in double-figures scoring 10 going 4-8 overall.
Khalil Baker chipped in six points and four boards.

For the Chargers
• Davontrey Thomas scored 19 points going 8-13 from the floor with two rebounds, three assists and two steals.
• Jah'Likai King added 16 points hitting a pair of threes.
• Ethan Simmon was deadly from three going 7-10, 9-13 from the floor and finished with a game-high 27 and nine rebounds.
• Joshua Hopson was 3-4 overall scoring six points with four rebounds.

News and Notes
• This is the fourth time the Lions and Chargers have matched up in their history. The Chargers improved to 4-0 against GCU. 
Charles Anyichie made his Lion debut. 
Clint Wright, Jr. moved into the Lions all-time top-five in minutes played. 
• Georgian Court Head Coach Terrence Stewart missed the game due to illness.

• The Lions are back home Saturday, Dec. 16. They host another Northeast 10 opponent in Southern Connecticut State, tipping off at 1 p.m.
