RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Feb. 11, 2023) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball keeps rolling at the end of the season. They picked up another win Saturday afternoon defeating Felician on the road 66-59. The win evens their conference record at 7-7 and moves them to 9-11 overall.
How it Happened
• The Lions defense did most of the heavy lifting. They held the Golden Falcons to just 31% shooting and 27% from three. Georgian Court meanwhile shot 41% overall and 32% from behind the arc.
• Felician left a lot of points on the floor as they were just 13-24 at the foul line. GCU was 8-9 at the charity stripe.
• Georgian Court had a sizable advantage on the glass, 43-34. Despite Felician grabbing three more offensive board, Georgian Court outscored them 11-10 in second-chance points.
• Both teams committed their fair share of turnovers. The Lions lost the ball 20 times and Felician 17. It was the Lions though who took advantage. They scored 19 points from those Golden Falcon turnovers while Felician scored just 15 points from turnovers.Â
• It took a while for the GCU offense to get going to start the game. The Lions didn't get on the board until the 6:29 mark when
Tian Addison sunk a pair of free throws. Fortunately, the Golden Falcon offense was struggling as well, and a three from
Jariah Patterson at 6:10 put the Lions up 5-4.Â
• That's when Felician went on an 8-0 run to go up 12-5 with less than three minutes to play in the quarter. They pushed the lead to eight, 15-7, but Georgian Court closed the first period on a 6-0 run over the final 1:08.
Imani Gillette was 4-4 at the free throw line and
Savawn Hughes scored a layup with 18 seconds left to get the Lions within two, 15-13, after one.
• The Golden Falcons still maintained a slight lead midway through the second quarter. With the Lions down three, Addison single-handedly put them back on top. She made a layup and followed that with a three-pointer for the Lions first lead since 5-4, 25-23.Â
• With less than a minute to play in the half,
Paula Perez-Fabregas sunk a three and Gillette knocked in a layup in the closing seconds to give the Lions their largest lead, 30-26.
• Addison again with back-to-back buckets in the third extended the Lions lead to seven, 35-28 just three minutes into the half.
Precious Adediran made it a nine-point game, 46-37, but Felician closed within two late in the quarter. A three-point play from
A'nya Harper pushed GCU ahead five, 49-44 with just 10 minutes left to play.
• In the fourth, Felician scored the first four points to close to just a single-point, 49-48. But then the Lions defense took over. They kept Felician scoreless for nearly four minutes while they extended their lead to nine, 60-51.
• Felician was able to get within six, but no closer after that as the Lions held on for the 66-59 win.
It Was Over When...
• Georgian Court's defense closed this one out. The Lions held Felician scoreless for nearly four full minutes while their offense was able to extend their lead to nine. Felician was never able to get within six over the final four minutes.Â
