Lions Drop Season Opener to No. 20 Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, NY (Feb. 17, 2023) - Opening the season in snowy Rochester, NY, Georgian Court Women's Lacrosse fell to nationally ranked number 20 Roberts Wesleyan Friday afternoon. The Redhawks scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed as they went on to win 13-7.

How it Happened
• Roberts Wesleyan controlled play outshooting the Lions 25-14. Of the Redhawks 25 shots, 23 were on net. Georgian Court put 11 of their 14 shots on goal.
• In the faceoff circle, Roberts Wesleyan controlled 13 draws to the Lions 11.
• The Redhawks forced GCU into committing 26 turnovers while Roberts Wesleyan lost the ball just 15 times.
• On the ground, Roberts Wesleyan picked up 22 ground ball to the Lions 13.
• Neither team took a penalty leaving the game at even strength for the full 60 minutes. 
• The game remained scoreless for more than eight minutes before Roberts Wesleyan broke through with a goal at the 6:57 mark. They tallied three in a 2:23 span to take an early 3-0 lead.
• Alyssa Wahl got the Lions on the board scoring her first of the season with 2:58 left. It was the Lions first shot of the game. 
• Not long after Wahl put GCU on the board, Roberts Wesleyan answered and made it 4-1 after one quarter.
• The Redhawks made it 5-1 early in the second but just 17 seconds later, Wahl came back with her second of the game to get to within three, 5-2.
• The final 4:09 of the half saw four goals scored. Roberts Wesleyan put two in going up five, 7-2. Remi Reinhardt scored her first of the season with one minute left in the half. The Redhawks added another though with 30 seconds left to go into break ahead 8-3.
• Georgian Court was nearly held scoreless for the third period. Roberts Wesleyan extended their lead to 10-3 before Wahl found Riley O'Connor with 31 seconds left to make it a 10-4 game. 
• Each team scored three goals in the fourth. The Redhawks netted the first three and the Lions the last. All three Lion goals came from different goal scorers in the final 5:21. 
• First was Caitlin Petrellese picking up her first collegiate goal. Isabel Raimondi scored her first of the season and O'Connor added her second of the game. 

Lion Stat Leaders
• Alyssa Wahl finished the game with four points, two goals and two assists. She ripped four shots, three on net.
• Riley O'Connor scored twice as well on three shots.
• Remi Reinhardt scored and dished out an assist. She also caused two turnovers.
• Isabel Raimondi and Caitlin Petrellese each scored a goal.
• In net, Alexis Hahn made 10 saves with a .435 save percentage. 
• Kelsey Naclerio and Jade Rivera each scooped up three ground balls.

For the Redhawks
• Annie Mulhall scored four goals and added two assists.
• Emma Blumenstock scored three goals on four shots 
• Tori Lammes, Sophia Podszebka, and Alexis Grant each scored twice.
• Shawna Lesmerises allowed seven goals on 11 shots on net making four saves.
• Emma Taylor picked up a game-high four ground balls and caused three turnovers. 

News and Notes
• Alyssa Wahl picked up career goal number 30. 
• Jade Rivera now had 20 ground balls in her career.
• Remi Reinhardt scooped up career ground ball number 25.
• The loss snaps the Lions 11 game winning streak dating back to the end of last season. 
• This is the Lions first season-opening loss since 2020.

• The road trip continues for the Lions. They'll head to Buffalo, NY to take on D'Youville Sunday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.
