LAKEWOOD, NJ (Feb. 8 , 2023) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball let an early lead slip away before the half, but came back strong putting up 42 in the second-half to push past Goldey-Beacom 76-69. The win brings the Lions to within a game of .500 in the CACC at 6-7 and 8-11 overall.
How it Happened
• Turnovers had been an issue for the Lions this season, but in this one, they flipped the script. They lost the handle just 11 times while forcing Goldey-Beacom into 17 turnovers. The Lions turned those 17 turnovers in 21 points, outscoring GBC 21-11 in points off turnovers.
• While the Lions outshot the Lightning 39%-34%, Goldey-Beacom hung tough hitting 8-26 from three while the Lions were just 5-24.
• At the foul line is where the Lions also took advantage. Despite being called for seven more fouls, GCU was 79% at the free throw line hitting 15-19. Goldey-Beacom made more, 17 in total, but left a lot out there, making just 61%, going 17-28.
• With the three ball not falling, GCU needed to be strong in the paint and they were. They outscored the Lightning 34-24 under the basket, but were outrebounded 50-44.
• Things were going well early for the Lions in this one. Last time these two teams met, Georgian Court allowed 15 straight to start the game. This time it was the Lions who scored the first five and held a 17-5 lead with 4:09 to play in the first. The troika of
A'nya Harper, seven points,
Tian Addison, five points and
Paula Perez-Fabregas, five points did all the scoring for GCU who opened the game 6-8 from the floor.
• Goldey-Beacom though fought back scoring seven straight and following an Alexis Harrison three-point play, trailed by just four after 10 minutes, 21-17.
• A pair for Janiya Stevens free throws made it a two-point game to start the second quarter and capped a 14-4 scoring run for the Lightning. Back-to-back
Andjela Kremenovic baskets gave the Lions some breathing room once again, but the Lightning scored the final four points of the half and took their first lead, 35-34, following two Izumi Mone free throws with 20 seconds left to play before the half, and that was the score at the break.
• At the half, the Lions found themselves in some foul trouble with
Tian Addison,
A'nyah Barker,
Imani Gillette and
A'nya Harper all with three fouls.Â
• The second half opened with nearly three full scoreless minutes.
A'nyah Barker ended that with a driving layup, her first points of the game. The Lions defense held the Lightning scoreless for the first 4:40 of the half while Barker did all the scoring herself. She scored the first six points, extending the Lions lead to 40-35.
• The score stayed around two possessions most of the rest of the quarter. Addison buried a three with under a minute remaining, but Harrison finished the half with a layup as the Lions led 48-44 through three.
• Both teams got hot in the final quarter, each scoring at least 25 points. The Lightning, after going 1-9 from three in the third, hit five triples in the final frame. GCU meanwhile was 9-18 overall and helped out by going 9-12 at the free throw line.
• The Lions again went nearly the first three minutes of the fourth quarter without a point, just like the third, however this time Goldey-Beacom didn't match them. They scored the first five to retake a 49-48 lead.
• The lead changed hands on five straight possessions as neither team was giving in an inch. Trailing by two, 55-53, Barker hit a midrange jumper to tie, then Gillette with an offensive rebound and putback at the 5:09 mark gave the Lions the lead once again, this time for good. The Lions would go on to score nine straight after falling behind 55-53.Â
• Another Lightning three from Karlee Lemon brought GBC to within three, 64-61, with 1:33 left to play, but the Lions went 8-10 at the foul line in the final 1:07 to hold the Lightning off.
It Was Over When...
• Goldey-Beacom knew they needed to foul to extend the game. They did their part, scoring eight in the final 55 seconds, but the Lions matched them sinking 6-8 at the line with a Perez-Fabregas layup mixed in to hang on for a gritty win.
