Lions Can't Get By No. 19 Mercy

LAKEWOOD, NJ (April 18, 2023) - The No. 19 Mercy Mavericks showed no Mercy in their 23-9 win over Georgian Court. The Mavs scored at least four in every period and ended GCU's winning streak at three to drop them to 8-7 on the season.

How it Happened
• Mercy was in possession most of the game thanks to winning 26-of-33 draw controls.
• They totaled 43 shots while Georgian Court got off just 13.
• Turnover numbers were even with the Lions losing it 12 times and Mercy 11. Mercy was 18-18 on clear attempts and GCU 19-of-21.
• There weren't many balls on the ground. Georgian Court got to 13 and Mercy 12.
• One huge factor were the yellow cards. Georgian Court was called for nine of them and Mercy scored seven woman-up goals.

First Half
• Mercy tallied the first two goals. While yellow cards were an issue for the Lions, it was the Mavericks who took the first one. That wasn't a problem as Leah Hansen was still able to make it a 2-0 game scoring a shorthanded goal.
Riley O'Connor cut the lead in half, 2-1, midway through the opening frame.
• The Mavericks scored the next four though, with three coming from Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk.
• With 15 seconds to go, Alyssa Wahl scored on a free-position shot and it was a 6-2 Mavericks lead after one.
• O'Connor with an assist from Ashley Pringle cut the lead in half, 6-3, 90 seconds into the second.
• Mercy though scored six of the next seven goals, extending their lead to 12-4.
• O'Connor and Pringle each netted one in the final three minutes to close out the half trailing 12-4.

Second Half
• It was still a six-goal lead when the GCU yellow cards started piling up. Having committed four in the first half, any penalty the rest of the way was non-releaseable.
• That led to consecutive Mercy goals with the woman-advantage late in the third. They tacked on another with just three seconds left to close the period ahead 19-8.
• In the fourth, Mercy tallied three more goals with the player-advantage and went on to win 23-9.
