Georgian Court Volleyball Starts Week Off at Kutztown

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 10, 2023) - Georgian Court Volleyball begins the first of a four-match week Monday evening in Pennsylvania.

Previously vs. Kutztown
• A year ago Georgian Court swept Kutztown in Lakewood three sets to zero, however all three sets were determined by the minimum two points.
• Georgian Court's passing proved to play a big role as they scooped eight more digs than Kutztown.
• GCU also scored five more blocks and three more service aces.
• The offense ran through Nylene Mateo who landed 19 kills to go along with nine digs.
Iciar Zayas dished out 25 assists and scored four aces.
Amiyah Woods and Chelsea Ross each picked up four blocks. 

Last Time Out
• Georgian Court went 2-0 Friday afternoon picking up wins over St. Thomas Aquinas and Bowie State.
• After dropping the first set of the day, GCU went on to win each of the next six.
• The Lions hit .366 for the match against Bowie State with 18 service aces.
Nylene Mateo combined for 21 kills and 10 service aces in the two matches plus 18 digs.
• Georgian Court's 18 service aces in a match were their most since landing 20 against University of the Sciences in 2013.

Who's Hot?
• Mateo was last week's CACC Player of the Week and she followed that up by scoring 21 kills and 10 aces Friday.
Giorgia Cappelletti hit .452 against STAC with a season-high 14 kills. She also has at least nine digs in each of her last three matches.
Martina Croce hit .500 against Bowie State with 10 kills and just one attack error. She has double-figure kills in two of her last three matches.
Iciar Zayas averaged 8.5 assists per set Friday while also landing three kills, two service aces and three blocks.
Chelsea Ross has at least four blocks in three of her first five games this season. She hit at least .400 with 10 kills Friday in her two matches.
Amiyah Woods has exactly five kills in four straight games and has hit better than .300 in three of five this season.

CACC Leaders
• With 3.47 kills per set and 4.3 points per set, Nylene Mateo is leading the CACC. She's the only player in the league scoring more than four points per set. 
• At 8.30 assists per set, Iciar Zayas is leading the CACC in assists. Dayna Diaz is third with 8.29.
Jessica Sprankle is in the league's top-10 in digs with her 3.16 digs per set ranking 10th.
Giorgia Cappelletti is seventh in the CACC with 2.68 kills per set and her .271 attack percentage ranks sixth. 
• Georgian Court is leading the league this season thus far hitting .225. The only team with an attack percentage greater than .200.
• The Lions also lead the league scoring 15.4 points per set and are second with 11.3 kills per set.
• GCU is also either first or second in the league in service aces and assists per set. 

Individual Milestones
• Jessica Sprankle needs three more service aces to get into the Lions all-time top-10 and is five digs away from 700 for her career. 
• Nylene Mateo will get into the Lions top-10 in kills with just 25 more. She's also 23 points away from 1,000. 
• Ava Venneri is 19 digs shy of 200.
• Amiyah Woods will hit 300 career points with 8.5 more. 
• Dayna Diaz needs 12 digs to get to 100 and 16 assists to reach 200.
Iciar Zayas is 34 assists shy of 900. 

About Kutztown
• The Golden Bears are off to a 4-3 start on the season, mostly against CACC competition.
• Of their seven games played, six have come against CACC foes where they are 4-2.
• Last weekend at the Wildcat Regional Invitational, the Golden Bears fell to host Wilmington before defeating Jefferson in five sets and Holy Family in four.
• Kutztown was picked to finish fifth in the PSAC East following a 13-12 regular season with a 7-7 mark in league play. It was the most regular season and conference wins since 2014.
• The Golden Bears are led by 2022 All-PSAC East First Team honoree Sadie Doss. She averaged 3.82 kills per set last year and has upped that to 4.58 to start off 2023. 
• Gabriela Fialova is averaging 3.81 kills per set. Her and Doss have combined for 293 of the Golden Bears 449 points this season, or 65% of the total offense.
• Fialova is also leading the team with 3.10 digs per set as the team has picked up 15.61 per match this year.
• Kutztown has been getting out blocked by more than a two-to-one ratio this year, 59.5-27.
