Madersbacher's Late Goal Pulls Lions Even at Saint Rose

ALBANY, NY (Sept. 12, 2023) - Georgian Court salvaged a 2-2 draw with the College of Saint Rose Tuesday afternoon thanks in part to a Mathias Madersbacher goal in the final two minutes. The draw puts the Lions at 0-2-1 on the season.

How it Happened
• Possession favored Saint Rose 57-43 however Georgian Court had more high-quality scoring chances spending 9% of their possession inside the Golden Knights box.
• Saint Rose tried to pepper the net more with shots and took 16 to the Lions eight. They put seven on goal while the Lions totaled three shots on target.
• Each side was issued just one yellow card but Saint Rose was called for 17 fouls. GCU was whistled for eight.
• In an even first half, the Golden Knights started strong with lots of possession in the offensive zone, but were unable to come away with any scoring chances.
• The Lions had the first opportunity. Mikey Mallon's shot from in front of the net was blocked and cleared out. GCU had another opportunity out in front of the goal, but Madersbacher's soft roller trickled just wide of the far post and stayed out.
• With under 10 minutes to play, a Lion yellow card gave Saint Rose a free kick opportunity. Nick Koenig connected from 25 yards out but Fabio Krissler was there to pop it over the crossbar.
• Following the free kick it looked like Georgian Court struck first, but their goal was disallowed for offsides. The Lions had one more shot at the end of the half that missed wide and after 45 minutes there was still no score.
• It didn't take long into the second half for Saint Rose to break that scoreless tie. Jose Clemente took a pass in the box, dribbled around Krissler and scored the games first goal in the 49th minute.
• Georgian Court answered in the 58th minute. Rhys Cotter sent one deep into the attacking zone. Ryan Lee was able to track it down along the goal line and send a cross out in front of the net where David Tuschmann one-touched it past the Golden Knights keeper.
• Saint Rose nearly took the lead back just two minutes later when Hilmar Halldorsson had a good look, but Krissler was up to the task and kept it out.
• In the 69th minute, it was Clemente again. Saint Rose gained possession in the midfield and Alejandro Aleo found Clemente. From the left corner just inside the 18, he took a step to his right around a defender, shot and scored for a 2-1 Golden Knight lead.
• Not long after, Saint Rose nearly took a two-goal advantage but their 20-yard chip shot clipped off the crossbar.
• Georgian Court had been working hard but were unable to find the equalizer. After some scrambling in the Golden Knight's box led to a Lions throw in, Zach Dittus sent one back in that skimmed of a Saint Rose head right to Mathias Madersbacher's feet. He shot low and left and didn't miss, tying the game with 1:42 left to play.
• In the final minute, Saint Rose had one more opportunity for the win. Saevar Jonsson had a point blank shot from 10 yards but Krissler was just quick enough to get a hand on it and keep it out. Time expired after that and GCU picked up their first points of the season.
