GCU Wraps Up Week at ESU Tournament

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 14, 2023) - Georgian Court Volleyball finishes up a four-match week tomorrow evening.

Previously vs. Saint Rose
• These two teams met last year in Lakewood with the Golden Knights winning a five-set match.
• Four of the five sets were determined by just two points.
• All-time GCU is just 2-3 against Saint Rose and 2-2 since becoming a Division II institution. 
• This is will be the third straight year these teams have met. 
• The numbers were very even last year with CSR hitting .232 and the Lions .228. GCU had two more kills and one more service ace.
Nylene Mateo had herself a match with 32 kills on 68 attempts. She completed a double-double with 18 digs.
Iciar Zayas passed out 51 assists. 

Previously vs. East Stroudsburg
• The Lions and Warriors are frequent partners during the preseason, including a scrimmage before the start of 2023.
• They've only met twice though during the regular season with the last match a decade ago in 2013.
• Each team has a victory to their credit, so tomorrow's match will be the tie breaker.
• All three matches, including tomorrow, have taken place at East Stroudsburg.
• Both of the previous matches ended in a 3-0 sweep. 

Last Time Out
• Georgian Court started CACC action red hot with a sweep of Goldey-Beacom.
• The Lions hit .272 for the match with the Lightning at -.134. It's the lowest opponent hitting percentage since 2017.
• Nylene Mateo led all scorers with 12 kills and 13 points. She also added six digs and a service ace.
• Giorgia Cappelletti and Martina Croce each landed six kills. Cappelletti added five service aces.
• Iciar Zayas passed out 25 assists to go along with a game-high nine digs.
• Jessica Sprankle added eight digs with five assists and two aces.
• Chelsea Ross and Amiyah Woods each put down five kills.

Who's Hot?
• Georgian Court has already had three CACC Athletes of the Week. Iciar Zayas was the most recent Setter of the Week. Dayna Diaz and Nylene Mateo each earned an award after the first week of play. 
• Zayas has 20+ assists in four straight matches and led GCU with nine digs both at Kutztown and against Goldey-Beacom.
• Mateo has hit .300 in three of her first seven matches this season. She also has double-figure kills in five of seven. 
• Giorgia Cappelletti hit .452 against STAC with a season-high 14 kills then bettered that hitting .455 against Goldey-Beacom. 
• Chelsea Ross has exactly four blocks in four of her first seven games this season. She hit at least .400 with 10 kills Friday in her two matches.
Amiyah Woods has five kills in five of her first seven matches. She hit .833 with five kills on six attempts against the Lightning. 

CACC Leaders
• With 16 service aces, Nylene Mateo in second in the league. She's also second in kills per set at 3.44 and points per set with 4.20. 
• At 8.13 assists per set, Iciar Zayas is third in league. She's one of just three setters averaging more than eight assists per set. 
• Giorgia Cappelletti is right behind Mateo in service aces with 15, third in the CACC. 
• Georgian Court is leading the league this season thus far hitting .216. The only team with an attack percentage greater than .200.
• The Lions also lead the league scoring 15.3 points per set and are third with 11.04 kills per set.

Individual Milestones
• Nylene Mateo will get into the Lions top-10 in kills with just five more. She also scored her 1,000th career point against Goldey-Beacom and is 49 kills away from 900. 
• Amiyah Woods will hit 300 career points with one more. 
• Dayna Diaz needs 12 digs to get to 100 and 11 assists to reach 200.
• Iciar Zayas is 57 assists away from moving to eighth all-time at GCU. 
• Jessica Sprankle needs two assists to get to 200.
• Ava Venneri is 16 digs shy of 200.

About The College of Saint Rose
• Saint Rose has dropped two straight matches and are 3-4 on the season.
• A year ago they finished 13-15 and were picked to finish eighth in the 2023 preseason coaches poll.
• As a team, Saint Rose is hitting .185 with 11 kills per set. 
• They've been losing points on the serve committing 72 errors in 28 sets. 
• Saint Rose is leading the NE10 in assists and blocks. 
• The offense runs through Jessica Vargas and Joanna Forrest. They each have more than 60 kills and more than 2.3 kills per set.
• The Golden Knights have typically deployed two setters. Alandra Hasbrouck leads the team with 5.86 assists per set and Taylor Grady has 3.95.
• Julia Cavalcanti has an NE10-best 34 blocks, twice as much as anyone else on the team. She's also hitting a team best .208.
• Katelyn Atchinson has a team-best 3.46 digs per set. 

About East Stroudsburg
• Like Saint Rose, East Stroudsburg is 3-4 to start the season. They've been hot of late winning three of their last four matches.
• In the 2023 preseason coaches poll, East Stroudsburg was picked to lead the PSAC East Division, garnering four of eight first-place votes.
• The Warriors are one of the top defensive teams leading the PSAC and are 19th nationally with 17.96 digs per set. 
• ESU's offense is hitting .183 as a team and their 2.08 aces per set are fourth in the league.
• Anna Coulter is the focal point of the offense with a team-best 72 kills and 4.21 points per set. She's also hitting .354 on the season and has 26 blocks.
• Makayla Baca is over five digs per set at 5.04. She's averaging nearly six digs per set in her last three matches and was last week's PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week.
• Taylor Haan is the primary setter for the Warriors averaging 9.39 assists per set.
