Griffins End Lions Winning Streak

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Jan. 23, 2024) - Georgian Court went into Philadelphia having won two straight CACC games. The Lions were up against the No. 2 team in the CACC South Division in Chestnut Hill who emphatically put an end to the Lions winning streak. GCU led after 10 minutes, but after 40, the scoreboard read Chestnut Hill 85-47. The loss puts GCU at 3-4 in the CACC regular season.

How it Happened
• Chestnut Hill had a day shooting the ball connecting at almost 50% overall while also making 7-11 from downtown.
• Georgian Court started the game 7-11, but finished 20-54 for 37%. The Lions struggled from three hitting just 1-5.
• The Griffins also helped themselves at the foul while where they made 16-20. GCU was 6-12 on free throws.
• CHC also won the rebounding battle, 42-29. That included 11 offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points.
• The Lions turned the ball over 16 times and forced just 10 Griffin turnovers. CHC turned those 16 turnovers into 17 points. 
First Quarter
• After spotting teams early leads last week, this time it was the Lions turn to get off to a hot start. GCU scored the first four points in the game.
• Now tied at six, the Lions went on an extended run, scoring eight straight to take a 14-6 lead. Safiatu Kolliegbo hit a three and Marta Guilera went for three the hard way.
• Georgian Court started the game 7-11 from the floor, but they couldn't keep the Griffins down long.
• Chestnut Hill climbed to within two, 18-16 when Imani Gillette's jumper with nine seconds to play looked to put GCU up four after one.
• In the final seconds though, Safiatu Kolliegbo was called for a foul. It not only put the Griffins to the line for two, but was Kolliegbo's third foul of the game.
• CHC knocked in both and after 10 minutes the Lions were up two, 20-18.
Second Quarter
• The Lion lead was vanquished on the Griffins first possession of the second. Bridie McCann buried a three for a 21-20 CHC lead.
• After Gillette put GCU back on top with a layup, there was McCann again for another three and now a two-point Griffin lead.
• Jada Jacobs knocked in a layup and with just over seven minutes to play in the half, the game was tied at 24.
• Georgian Court went a bit cold after that, not scoring for more than three minutes. In that time, Chestnut Hill scoring five straight to take their largest lead, 29-24.
• Kolliegbo, playing with three fouls, ended the scoring drought with a layup.
• With Chestnut Hill still ahead three, consecutive Lion turnovers led to a Griffin three-pointer and jumper to bring the lead to eight and that's where it stayed at the half, 38-30.
• Chestnut Hill was on fire from three in the first half, hitting 5-7. 
• Georgian Court turned the ball over 10 times which led to nine CHC points. 
Third Quarter
• The Lions started the half with Imani Gillette finishing an and-one to cut the Griffin lead down to five, 38-33.
• With CHC now leading 40-35, the Griffins went on a 17-4 run to take control of the game, going up 18, 57-39.
• In the second and third quarters, Chestnut Hill outscored Georgian Court 41-21 and led 59-41 heading to the fourth. 
Fourth Quarter
• The quarter started with Chestnut Hill scoring the first 10 points.
• Gillette's layup at the 6:09 mark were the first points of the fourth for GCU who went nearly the first four minutes scoreless.
• With the game in hand, the two teams played out the rest of the quarter with Chestnut Hill victorious, 85-47.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Imani Gillette led GCU scoring 13 points.
• Marta Guilera added 11 on 5-8 shooting with a team-best five rebounds.
• Safiatu Kolliegbo chipped in seven points.

For the Griffins
• Bridie McCann scored 16 with a pair of three-pointers.
• Avery White scored 16 as well and added four assists.
• Caleigh Edwards finished with 14 points and six rebounds.
• Caralne Herb was 3-3 from behind the arc, 5-5 overall and scored 13. 

News and Notes
• Imani Gillette surpassed 200 career points. 
• Georgian Court falls to 13-18 all-time against the Griffins.

Up Next
• Georgian Court remains on the road later this weekend. They'll be up in Connecticut to take on Post out of the CACC North with a 1 p.m. tipoff.
