No. 6 Jefferson Too Much For Lions Tuesday Night

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (January 9, 2023) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball got back into conference play Tuesday evening in Philadelphia. The Lions were up against the No. 6 team in the nation in Jefferson and couldn't overcome the high-powered Rams in an 81-49 loss.

How it Happened
• Jefferson shot 53% overall doing most of their damage inside. The Rams connected on just two three-pointers and scored 54 points in the paint.
• That was two more than the Lions though who were 0-7 from behind the arc. Georgian Court shot 38.5% overall.
• The Rams defense forced the Lions into 25 turnovers and came up with 18 steals.
• Georgian Court did win the rebounding edge, 33-30.
First Quarter
• Jefferson scored the first four points of the game and never trailed.
• The Lions tied the game quickly at four, but then the Rams scored eight straight to open up a 12-4 lead.
• The Rams pushed the lead to 10, 19-9, then kept it at 10 in the final seconds of the quarter as Haley Meinel made two at the line for a 25-15 lead after one.
Second Quarter
• Jefferson extended their lead in what was the lowest scoring frame for the Lions.
• Leading 34-21, Jefferson scored nine unanswered to push their lead over 20 at 43-21.
• The Rams finished the first half holding a 45-24 lead. 
Third Quarter
• The Lions held Jefferson below 20 points in a quarter for the first time in the third.
• Jefferson still was able to put up 17 points and took a 29 point lead, 59-32.
• GCU finished the third outscoring the Rams 6-3, as Marta Guilera made a jumper in the closing seconds.
Fourth Quarter
• With just under eight minutes left to play, Jefferson built the lead to 30 for the first time, 70-40.
• Neither team scored much in the frame as Jefferson was content to let the clock run out.
• The teams traded baskets for the most part until 40 minutes were complete with the scoreboard reading 81-49 Rams.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Imani Gillette led the Lions with 22 points and eight rebounds. She was 9-18 from the floor.
• Niyell McCargo was also in double-figures scoring 10. She grabbed seven boards and dished four assists.
• Marta Guilera added eight points on 4-6 shooting.

For the  Rams
• Hailey Meinel finished with a game-high 24 points going 9-13 from the floor with four assists.
• Morgan Robinson added 16 with six assists.
• Sam Yencha scored 14 and was a rebound shy of a double-double.
• Cassie Murphy was the fourth Ram in double-figures scoring 12 with seven boards.

News and Notes
• Imani Gillette collected her 150th career rebound. She has scored in double-figures in all three games since returning from injury.
• Gillette's 22 points are also a new career-high. She's set new career-bests in points in two of her last three games. 
• Niyell McCargo grabbed her 50th rebound of her freshman campaign. 
• Jefferson is now 31-6 all time against Georgian Court.
• The last time the Lions didn't make a single three-pointer was Jan. 30, 2021 against Nyack. 

Up Next
• Georgian Court remains on the road this weekend. They'll play a rare Sunday afternoon game at 1 p.m. at Dominican.
