LAKEWOOD, NJ (Oct. 12, 2024) - Georgian Court Men's Soccer enjoyed one of their finest offensive afternoon's in years. The Lions scored six goals in a 6-1 win against Bloomfield as GCU won their seventh straight game. Georgian Court now sits at 7-4-1 on the season.
How it Happened
• The offense was thoroughly in control taking more than three times as many shots, 31-9.
• The Lions also put 17 shots on target, six goals and 11 saves.
• GCU was able to earn five corner kicks, scoring on one. The Bears took three from the corner flag.
• Foul count was pretty high, 18-16 GCU. Bloomfield was booked for four yellow cards and GCU one.
• The scoring started early, as it has for many GCU games, however this time it wasn't the Lions with the game's first tally.
• GCU had a chance in the first two minutes, but
Svante Haakansson hit the post and it kicked out.
• That allowed Bloomfield to move forward in transition where Bernardo Gomes found Christian Jhon Cruz who cut across the field, fired and scored less than three minutes in.
• It didn't take long for the equalizer to come though. Off a corner kick, the ball bounced around a bit.
Mikey Mallon sent the ball into the box where
Maurice Engl was able to gather it, shoot and score, tying the game in the ninth minute.
• Less than 10 minutes later, the Lions had their first lead. Engl took a corner kick and Haakansson didn't miss this time. His header went above the keeper and into the net.
• The scored remained that way for much of the rest of the half. Sander Meintjes made a handful of saves to keep it a one-goal game.
• In the final minute, a 50-50 call went the way of Bloomfield and instead of the GCU penalty kick, it was a Bear free kick.
• That didn't matter though as on the free kick,
Woodley Cagilus was the first to it, using his head to push it forward to Gijs van Eif who outran the defense and scored with just 21 seconds left to play in the half.
• Neither team was able to hit in the net in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
• Georgian Court padded their lead with two goals from
David Tuschmann 12 minutes apart.
• Haakansson and Cagilus picked up the assists on Tuschmann's tallies.
• With less than 10 minutes to play, GCU finally did get that penalty kick they were asking for. A foul inside the box sent van Eif to the dot to take the penalty. He didn't miss scoring his second of the game, 10th of the season and the added the exclamation point on the Lions 6-1 win.
