NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Nov. 9, 2024) - Georgian Court Women's Basketball got off to a slow start in their season opener and never recovered in a 105-33 loss at Southern Connecticut.
How it Happened
• Georgian Court shot just 23% overall and were 2-11 from three. SCSU was a tick below 50% overall and hit 10-23 from behind the arc.
• The Owls asserted their will on the boards with 53 rebounds to the Lions 19. The gobbled up 18 offensive rebounds and scored 27 second-chance points.
• Turnovers were a major problem for GCU. They lost the ball 38 times which led to 45 SCSU points and 16 in transition.
1st Half
• Georgian Court briefly held a lead in this one. SCSU started the game 0-3 with a turnover and
Alexi Hoy's layup at the 7:32 mark of the quarter were the first points of the game.
• They were also the last points GCU would score in the first. The Owls hit a three ending a 3:14 scoring drought and led the rest of the way. After the first 10 minutes, SCSU was up 16-2.
• The second quarter is where things really got out of hand. SCSU shot 15-22 overall and 6-9 from three in the quarter and scored 43 points.
• GCU couldn't keep up and after 20 minutes of play, SCSU led 59-12.
2nd Half
• The Owls continued to pour it on in the second half, scoring another 32 points in the third quarter.
• Georgian Court scored 13 and went 5-14 for their best quarter of the afternoon.
• Both teams emptied their bench as the outcome in this was no longer in question.
• GCU held the Owls to just 14 fourth-quarter points, but SCSU still hit the century mark on their way to a 105-33 win.

Jade Dickson came off the bench to score a team-best six points, making four free throws.

Julia Whesper each scored four. Whesper added four rebounds.

For the Owls
• Katie Williamson was 10-15 for 26 points and eight rebounds.
• Delaney Haines added 17 with four assists.
• The Owls had five in double-figures. Jillian Martin added 13 while Hope Fox and Rheyna Steinauer each scored 10.
News and Notes
• This is the fourth straight season these teams have met. GCU is 1-3 in those games and falls to 1-5 all-time against the Owls.

Karissa Smedley scored her 100th career point.
• The Lions allowed 100 points in a game for the first time since Dominican scored 101 back in 2005.
