QUEENS, NY (Dec. 1, 2024) - It took a little longer than he may have liked, but new Georgian Court Head Coach
Dave Fedor got his first win in the blue and gold Sunday morning with a 72-67 victory over Queens. Fedor sat through all of November before breaking through on the first day of December to get his name into the Lion record books.
How it Happened
• Both teams shot better than 40% for the game with the Lions hitting 23-54 and the Knights 24-50.
• Georgian Court sunk 10 three-pointers, twice as many as Queens.
• Each team shot 66% at the line as the Lions hit 16-24 and the Knights 14-21.
• Turnovers were a big part. Each team had more than 20 with Queens turning it over 24 times and the Lions 21. GCU led 26-25 in points off of turnovers.
• Georgian Court won the rebounding battle 36-31, and 14-10 on the offensive glass.
1st Half
• A back-and-forth first half saw three ties and fives lead changes.
• Queens got it started scoring the first five points in the game. The Lions responded with three-pointers from
Taheen Braswell-Brown and
Cam Edmonds.
• Tied at nine, Georgian Court went on an 8-2 run and led 17-11 with 8:26 left to play.
• But GCU went cold after that, not scoring for more than four minutes as Queens put up 10 straight. The Lions were 0-4 with four turnovers during the Knights' scoring stretch.
•
Justin Harper broke the drought with a jumper at the 3:45 mark and back-to-back Edmonds buckets, the last of which was a three, put the Lions back in front, 24-22 with just over two minutes left in the half.
• With the Lions up one in the closing minute of the half,
Donavin Crawford made a layup which was answered by the Knights. The final possession of the half saw Braswell-Brown collect and offensive rebound and beat the buzzer with a putback as the Lions took a 30-27 lead into halftime.
• Both teams shot better than 40% in the half, but struggled holding onto the ball. Queens turned it over 14 times and Georgian Court 12.
2nd Half
• Georgian Court came out firing to start the second half.
Justin Soranno made a layup and Edmonds hit his fourth three-pointer of the game to extend the lead to 35-27 a minute into the half and forcing Queens to call a timeout.
• Things didn't get better for the Knights as Crawford buried a three, then came up with a steal and score bringing the Lion dead to double-digits, 40-28.
• Queens responded, going on a 7-0 run to bring the lead back into single digits.
• The three-ball kept falling for the Lions though. Each time Queens rallied, GCU was seemingly there with a three to stop it.
Jacob Santiago and
Justin Harper each hit a long ball putting the Lions up 13 with 12:35 left in the game.
• Five minutes later though, that lead was cut in half thanks to another 7-0 Queens run and a steal and a three brought the lead down to four, 54-50, with 6:16 remaining.
• Queens made it a one-possession game, but following another Knights turnover, Edmonds buried another three-pointer and followed that with a layup to bring the Lion lead back to seven, 61-54, with less than four minutes remaining.
• The teams were trading baskets down the stretch, which for Georgian Court meant more time coming off of the clock.
• Queens started the fouling early and sent
Cam Edmonds to the line a bunch where he made 7-8 inside the final three minutes.
• Defensively, the Lions made a mistake fouling Shamar Chester on a three-point attempt up six with 32 seconds left. Chester hit all three and it was once again a one-possession game.
• On the ensuing possession, Harper went 1-2 bringing the lead back to four. Chester was again fouled and too went 1-2.
• After Edmonds hit another two at the line, Queens couldn't convert on their end, Harper gobbled up the rebound and the Lions held on for a 72-67 win.
