Lions Let Halftime Lead Slip Away in Loss to New Haven

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Dec. 10, 2024) - Georgian Court Men's Basketball took a 12-point lead into halftime, but couldn't hang on as New Haven outscored the Lions by 21 in the second half to complete the comeback in a 62-53 win over GCU.

How it Happened
• It really was a tale of two halves as Georgian Court scored 34 in the first, but managed just 19 in the second. New Haven was rolling in the second half scoring 40 after putting up just 22 in the first 20 minutes.
• GCU finished the game shooting 30.5%. They were up at 38% in the first half, but made 7-23, 23.3% in the second. After going 3-9 from downtown in the first half, the Lions were just 4-16 in the second.
• New Haven was at 41.7% for the game and made 55.2% in the final half, after shooting below 30% in half number one. They finished just 5-24 from three but outscored the Lions 32-18 in the paint.
• The Chargers won the battle on the boards, 44-34. That too showed up in half number two. The Lions were outrebounding the Chargers 23-19 after 20 minutes, but in the second, New Haven pulled down 25 to the Lions 11.
• Turnovers were limited. Georgian Court lost the ball just six times and New Haven only eight.
1st Half
• Scoring was at a premium in the early going. Georgian Court got a layup from Cam Edmonds following an offensive rebound on their first possession to start the scoring for the night.
• It stayed 2-0 for nearly three minutes. New Haven tied the game at two at the 16:26 mark before the Lions untied right after with a three-ball from Jahsan Johnson
• Georgian Court led for the rest of the half and opened things up to an 11-4 with 13:09 left on a layup from Justin Harper.
• New Haven responded to make it a two-point game, but a three from Harper and a layup from Taheen Braswell-Brown pushed the lead back out to seven halfway through.
• The lead stayed around seven until there were less than five minutes to play. Edmonds was fouled on a three and knocked down all three free throws to give the Lions their largest lead, 28-16.
• The teams traded points the rest of the way and that 12-point lead was still in tact at the half, 34-22.
2nd Half
• New Haven took control early in the second half. After each team made an early basket, New Haven went on a 16-0 run where the Lions were scoreless for six full minutes.
Miles White ended the drought with a three, but New Haven went on another long scoring burst, 11-2 and took a 10-point lead, 51-41 with 6:13 left to play.
• All totaled, it was a 27-5 Charger run that spanned 10:41.
• Back-to-back threes from Donavin Crawford and Edmond pulled GCU within four, 51-47, but New Haven answered right away with a long ball of their own.
• Georgian Court was never able to bring it back to a one-possession game and New Haven completed the comeback win, 62-53.
