No. 9 Mercy Takes Down Lions Lacrosse

DOBBS FERRY, NY (Feb. 27, 2024) - Georgian Court ended the month of February with a tough task. They were at No. 9 Mercy, their second top-10 opponent in seven days. Mercy scored a bunch in the first to take an early lead and never looked back, defeating the Lions 19-9 and dropping GCU to 2-2 on the season. 

How it Happened
• Most of the numbers were fairly even. Mercy was up just six in shots, however had more success putting those on net and scoring.
• One of the biggest advantages for the Mavericks was in the turnover department. GCU turned it over 19 times and Mercy just 10.
• On clears, Georgian Court was 19-23 and Mercy 22-26.
• Faceoffs were also close with GCU winning 15-32 and Mercy 17-32. 
• The Lions took just one penalty and didn't killed it off. GCU was 1-2 with their extra man opportunities. 
First Quarter
• Georgian Court opened the scoring as Matt Dorrian took a feed from Tyler Burns and the Lions led 1-0 less than a minute in.
• Mercy answered though with four straight, the latter two coming just nine seconds apart.
Tallen Smith cut the lead in half, 4-2, with Burns picking up his second assist.
• But the Mavericks finished the first scoring three straight and led 7-2 after one.
Second Quarter
• The scoring slowed down in the second quarter. It took more than eight minutes for either team to hit the net.
• Mercy then scored twice in 60 seconds opening up 9-2 lead.
• Smith scored his second of the game and the Lions third.
• The Mavericks finished the half scoring in the final 30 seconds to take a 10-3 lead at intermission.
Third Quarter
• Mercy got out quick scoring just 29 seconds into the half.
• Georgian Court got two goals 39 seconds apart from Tyler Burns and Harrison Jordan, Burns' third point of the game.
• The Mavericks then scored in rapid succession. Four goals in 65 seconds to go up by 10, 15-5. 
• Georgian Court got three late goals, two more from Smith as he recorded his second straight hat trick and one from James Sanford. Mercy added two in the final minute and led 18-8 after three.
Fourth Quarter
• There wasn't much scoring in the fourth. Brett Bridges popped a goal for the Lions and Mercy scored their 19th.
• That was all the goals there were the in the final frame with Mercy coming out on top, 19-9.

Lion Stat Leaders
Vincent Burkhart was in net and made 15 stops.
Tyler Burns led GCU with five points, four assists and a goal.
Tallen Smith scored four times on 11 shots.
Garrett Kenny won 14-31 faceoffs with four ground balls.
Vincent Burns and Kyle Harms each scooped three ground balls. 
Michael Schone caused a pair of turnovers and grabbed three grounders.

For the Mavericks
• Cameron Dorftman made 13 saves for the win.
• Greg Biggons scored six points dishing out five assists and scoring a goal.
• Andrew Calabria passed out four assists.
• Devon Duchnowski, Christopher Bergerse and Brody Caskenette each scored four times.
• Jason Kuehner went 17-32 on faceoffs with eight ground balls.
• Damiano Ferrara also grabbed eight ground balls with two goals scored.

News and Notes
Tyler Burns collected his 25th career point. His four point day is also a career high.
Tallen Smith moved to fourth all-time at GCU in shots. 
• Georgian Court is now 0-9 all-time against Mercy.
Vincent Burkhart's 15 saves are his most this season.

• Georgian Court is off for the next week. They return home next Tuesday, March 5 when they host Pace at 3 p.m.
