Lions Nearly Complete Comeback Against No. 14 Wingate but Drop Both Games of Twin Bill

WINGATE, NC (Feb. 27, 2024) - It must have felt like deja vu for Georgian Court Softball. Tuesday's doubleheader followed the same script at Sunday's. A run-rule loss in game one. Followed by a huge seventh-inning rally to tie in game two, only to lose on a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh. That's how it played out for the Lions though who dropped a doubleheader to No. 14 Wingate first 12-1 in five innings and then the game second 8-7.

Game 2 - Wingate 8, Georgian Court 7
How It Happened

• Wingate out hit the Lions 9-8.
• GCU popped a double and a home run while the Bulldogs connected for three doubles.
• Wingate made two errors in the field costing them two unearned runs. The Lions also allowed two unearned runs from their one error.
• Georgian Court had chances in each of the first two innings. In the first they drew two walks and were hit by a pitch but failed to score.
• The Lions saw a lot of pitches in the second, 38 of them with four batters going to a full count. They again drew two walks but couldn't get a run across the plate.
• In the bottom of the first, Wingate scored their first on a sacrifice fly. It looked like the inning would end there, but an error kept the door open for the Bulldogs and they pushed through with a two-out, two-RBI double to take a 3-0 lead.
• Georgian Court kept the Bulldogs off the board in the second and third innings, but they tacked on three more in the fourth. An RBI single and a two-out, two-RBI double gave Wingate a 6-0 lead.
• Just like in game two of the season opener Sunday, the Lions didn't quit. They used a four-run fifth to get back into the game.
Lia DeMaio led off with a double and scored on Adriana Mungo's RBI single. Alyssa Herrera then drove in Cheyenne Jackson with a single and Mungo followed on an error in the outfield. Herrera scored herself on a passed ball.
• Wingate added an insurance run in the home half of the fifth, going up 7-4 on an RBI double.
• Down to their last out again, GCU rallied to tie the game at seven. Mungo and Kaitlyn Stufft led off with singles. Herrera scored Mungo with a ground out and Jadalynn Rodriguez tied it launching a home run to right.
• The Lions got a walk and a single to follow, but an out on the bases ended the inning with the game tied at seven.
• That proved costly as the Bulldogs needed just three batters, getting a walk and two singles for an 8-7 walk-off win.
