Men's Basketball Drops Heart-Breaker at Home to Holy Family

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Feb. 6, 2024) - Georgian Court and Holy Family played a full 40-minute game Tuesday night at the Wellness Center. The battle could have gone either way, but in the end it was the Tigers, overcoming a five-point half-time deficit, to pull out a 63-60 win over the Lions.

How it Happened
• The game featured six lead changes and five ties. Georgian Court actually led for nearly 65% of the game, including holding a lead with 28 seconds to play.
• Georgian Court outshot Holy Family 41.5%-35%. The Tigers made up for it from deep connecting on three more triples.
• Total rebounding numbers were close with HFU holding a slight edge, 38-35. The Tigers though grabbed 15 offensive boards and scored 13 second-chance points.
• The Lions turned the ball over 22 times which led to 29 Tiger points. Holy Family turned it over their fair-share too, 19 times, but GCU scored just 20 off those giveaways.
First Half
• A jumper from Taheen Braswell-Brown and a three from Donavin Crawford got Georgian Court going, pushing them out to an early 5-0 lead.
• Holy Family came back to tie, but never took the lead, thanks in part to another three-pointer, this time from Clint Wright, Jr. at the 14:18 mark.
• Another three from Wright, Jr. made it an eight-point Lion lead, 16-8, with just over 11 minutes to play in the half.
• The Tigers fought their way to get the GCU lead to to two on a handful of occasions, but the Lions led the entire half. They held the Tigers to just two points in the final two minutes and led by five at the break, 32-27.
Second Half
• Early in the second half, Anthony Rivera scored six straight for GCU, giving the Lions their largest lead of the game, 42-33 with 15:48 left.
• But Holy Family got hot, especially from three after that. They hit 3-4 and forced five Lion turnovers to go on a 14-0 scoring run, taking their first lead, 47-42, with just under 12 minutes left.
• The Tiger lead was still five, 56-51, with 5:23 to go.
• Wright, Jr. hit another triple to bring it down to two, and Rivera with a layup tied the game at 56 with 3:10 left.
• Holy Family took the lead right back, but a technical foul gave GCU the chance to tie at the line and possession. Wright, Jr. calmly hit both and we were tied once again, 58-58 with 2:23 in the game.
• Georgian Court didn't convert on the ensuring possession, but got a stop and Rivera with a jumper put them up 60-58 with 67 seconds left.
• The Lions got a steal on the defensive end, but could not convert giving the ball back to Holy Family with less than 30 seconds to play.
• The Tigers looked inside and Ryan Holmes hit a layup and drew a foul with 15 seconds. He hit the and-one to go up 61-60.
• With three seconds on the clock, Braswell-Brown drove to the basket but was called for the charge and the turnover. Holy Family hit two more at the line and GCU didn't get a shot off as the Tigers escaped with a 63-60 win.
