Georgian Court Acrobatics and Tumbling Defeated by Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (March 27, 2024) - Georgian Court Acrobatics and Tumbling took to the mat once again Wednesday night for their penultimate meet of the season. The Lions had to fore-go the team event which was a big hit to their final score, but GCU still had some strong performances in the other five events.

The Lions took on one of the top teams in the country in Iona, who were ranked in the NCATA coaches poll to start the season. After all events were scored, Iona picked up the win 261.610-125.00

Starting with the compulsory, Georgian Court scored their second-highest score in four meets. The Lions totaled 22.65 in compulsory. They scored 5.00 in acro, 8.65 in the pyramid and 7.00 in the toss. Iona picked up 36.3 points out of a possible 40.

The Lions had a great showing in the acro event. All three heats and the total score were season-bests. GCU scored 7.45 in the five-element, 6.65 in the six-element and 7.35 in the seven-element for a total of 21.45. The Gaels picked up 28.15 points in the event.

For the second straight meet, GCU set a new season-high in the pyramid. The Lions totaled 23.70, a full point higher than last week. They had a point differential of just five and their 8.20 in the open pyramid was a season-best. Georgian Court also scored 7.85 in the inversion and 7.65 in the synchronized. Iona picked up 29.10 points in the pyramid. At the half, Iona led 93.55-67.80.

Coming out of halftime was the toss. The Lions put up point totals of 7.20 in the 450 salto, 5.45 in the synchronized and 5.65 in the open for an event total of 18.30. Iona scored 26.30.

In the six-heat tumbling event, GCU scored 38.90 points. The Lions picked up 7.45 in the duo, 5.30 in the trio, 2.65 in the quad, 8.075 in the aerial, 8.30 in the six-element, and 7.125 in the open pass. Iona continued their great day scoring 51.450.

The Lions were unable to compete in the team event, meaning their total score of 126.600 was a five-event total. Iona scored 89.96 in the team portion.

Georgian Court has one meet left in their inaugural season. They host LIU and Stevenson next Friday, April 5 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
