Lions Hang on For Tight 14-12 Win

ALBANY, NY (March 9, 2024) - Georgian Court Men's Lacrosse snapped a brief two-game losing stream Saturday afternoon in the Empire State capitol. The game was a series of runs with the Lions getting the last one in a 14-12 win over The College of Saint Rose.

How it Happened
• The game was evenly played with most numbers mirroring each other. The Lions totaled 42 shots and the Golden Knights 43 while shots on goal favored the Lions 29-23.
• Saint Rose claimed a majority of the faceoffs, 17-13. They also turned the ball over more though, 23-20.
• Georgian Court was 20-24 on clears and Saint Rose 16-24.
• Ground ball numbers were also close with Saint Rose picking up 34 and GCU 31.
First Quarter
• Saint Rose put three of the first four goals on the board, getting the third a man-up at the 6:58 mark of the first.
• Tyler Burns made it a 3-2 games, but Saint Rose netted two more to end the period up 5-2.
• Doug Mackenzie also scored for the Lions.
Second Quarter
• Trailing by three, Georgian Court ripped off three straight goals to tie. It was the Tyler show with Tyler Michalski scoring the first and third and Tyler Burns netting the second of the 3-0 run.
• Again on the man-advantage, Saint Rose reclaimed the lead and then went back up by two, 7-5 with 5:17 left in the half.
• The Lions closed the first 30 minutes scoring twice though with James Sanford scoring each time, once a man-up and the score was tied at intermission.
Third Quarter
• GCU scored the first two of the second half to give them four straight. Mackenzie and Matt Dorrian gave the Lions their first lead of the game.
• Georgian Court outscored the Golden Knights 3-1 in the third and were up two, 10-8 heading to the fourth following a Harrison Jordan goal.
• Neither team scored over the final 6:46. Vincent Burkhart made two saves over that stretch and Saint Rose twice hit the post.
Fourth Quarter
• Georgian Court pushed their lead to a game-high four, 12-8, just 1:08 into the fourth.
• Burns and a Dorrian man-up goal were the goal scorers.
• Then it was Saint Rose's turn to go on a run. They scored four straight in 6:53 to tie, all even strength.
• Following the game-tying goal, Garrett Kenny won the faceoff for the Lions. Then with two minutes remaining, Mackenzie took a feed from Brett Bridges and gave GCU the lead back.
• GCU won the next faceoff again with Max Dennington getting to the ground ball. Saint Rose took a penalty, but GCU turned the ball over with less than 50 seconds left.
• Georgian Court's defense stood tall and didn't allow a clear with Joe Murphy scooping the ground ball to give possession back to GCU. Bridges then sealed the win with a goal to put the Lions up two, 14-12 with 18 seconds left and that's how it ended.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Brett Bridges led GCU with five points. He scored the final goal while assisting on four others. He also caused a turnover and grabbed a ground ball.
• Matt Dorrian scored twice and assisted on two others.
• Doug Mackenzie and Tyler Burns each scored three goals.
• Tyler Michalski scored twice with two ground balls.
• Vincent Burkhart got the win making 11 saves.
• Garrett Kenny was 13-30 on faceoffs with three ground balls.

For the Golden Knights
• Noah Gibson scored five goals on nine shots with two ground balls.
• Jack Rice and Cam Smith each scored twice.
• Eoghan Sweeney was 13-22 on faceoffs with nine ground balls.
• Walter Ross caused three turnovers.
• Luke Pemrick grabbed three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
• Ryan Gainor totaled 15 saves.

News and Notes
• The last two games between these teams have been decided by just three goals.
• Last year GCU broke a 10-all tie with 6:29 to play. This year the game-winner came with just two minutes left.
• GCU is now 2-1 all-time against the Golden Knights
• Vincent Burkhart made his 300th career save.
• Hunter Rindos caused his 10th career turnover.
• Doug Mackenzie scored his 25th career point.
• Vincent Burns played in his 20th game.
• This was the Lions first game this season decided by fewer than five goals. 

Up Next
• Georgian Court has another Northeast-10 opponent on deck. They host Assumption Wednesday, March 13 at 3 p.m. It'll be the Lions IBS/Colitis game in support of finding a cure for the disease.
