Softball's Split Gets Them Berth in CACC Tournament

LAKEWOOD, NJ (April 23, 2024) - Georgian Court Softball secured their spot in the CACC Tournament Tuesday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Jefferson in their home finale. The Lions took game one in five innings 11-3 but fell in the nightcap 6-4. GCU stands at 20-22 overall and 12-8 in the CACC. 

Game 1 - Georgian Court 11, Jefferson 3 - 5 Innings
How it Happened

• Georgian Court scored 11 runs on nine hits and were helped out by three Jefferson errors.
• Those errors allowed five unearned runs to score for the Lions.
• The Rams totaled three runs on six hits. GCU made one error in the field, but it did not lead to an unearned run.
• Of GCU's nine hits, three were for extra bases with two doubles and a triple. The Rams had five singles and one double.
• Jefferson stranded seven runners on base. GCU left four on.
• Jefferson loaded the bases in the first with two hits and a walk, but Janelle Blaszka got a pop up and a fly out to end the inning unharmed.
• Georgian Court returned the favor in the home half of the inning, loading the bases. Charlee Mae Sinderud came through to drive in the first two runs of the game.
Isabella Molina capped the inning with a single to left and the Lions were up three after one.
• The Rams were right back at it in the second, putting the first three batters on base. They pushed one across on a sacrifice fly, but Blaszka was able to limit the damage.
• GCU got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Kaitlyn Stufft's RBI double down the left field line scored Brittany Gable.
Gabriella Aleman broke the game open a couple batters later with a bases clearing double off the fence to score three more and give GCU a 7-1 lead.
• Blaszka settled down but still allowed a run in the fourth.
• The Lions put up more runs a half inning later. Adriana Mungo led off with a triple and scored on Kaitlyn Stufft's fielder's choice. Aleman picked up another RBI with a single through the right side and Brittany Gable's pop fly that was dropped to score two more and bring the lead to 11-2.
• The Rams got a run in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to stop the game from ending in five, 11-3.

Lion Stat Leaders
Janelle Blaszka threw all five innings allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and a strikeout.
Gabriella Aleman was 2-3 with a double and four runs batted in.
Kaitlyn Stufft drove in two and scored twice with a double. 
Charlee Mae Sinderud drove in two with a single and scored.
Adriana Mungo reached base all three times with a single, triple, walk and three runs scored.

For the Rams
• Jordan Deiring gave up all 11 runs, six earned on nine hits with three walks.
• Rozalee Negron finished 2-3.
• Sage Bolonski drove in two runs.
• Victoria Juckniewitz singled and scored a run.

How it Happened

• Jefferson put together 12 hits to score six runs, all of them singles.
• The Lions punched 11 hits with five going for doubles.
• There were plenty of baserunners stranded with the Rams leaving 10 on and GCU seven.
• Georgian Court struck out four times and didn't walk. Jefferson fanned four times as well and drew one walk.
• Errors played a key part in the game. The Lions committed four which led to three unearned runs. The Rams played a clean game after making three in the opening game. 
• The first scoring chance for either team came in the fourth. Jefferson loaded the bases with one out thanks to a pair of GCU errors on the infield. They sent eight to the plate and scored three runs to grab the 3-0 lead.
• Jefferson tacked on in the fifth all with two outs. They collected five straight hits starting with an infield single and scored three times to get on top 6-0.
• The Lions broke the shutout in the bottom of the sixth. A two out single from Charlee Mae Sinderud and a double from Gabriella Aleman plated the Lions first run.
• Georgian Court showed fight in the seventh. Alyssa Herrera led off with a double and scored on Adriana Mungo's single. Mungo and Cheyenne Jackson came in to score on Kaitlyn Stufft's two RBI double to bring the tying run to the plate.
• Jefferson got out of the inning though with a fly out and a strikeout to hang on to the 6-4 win. 

Lion Stat Leaders
Kaitlyn Stufft finished 3-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in.
Alyssa Herrera pinch hit and scored following her double.
Adriana Mungo had a single, run and an RBI in four trips to the plate.
Gabriella Aleman singled and drove in a run.
Julia Lapp pitched all seven innings all six runs, three earned with four strikeouts.

For the Rams
• Gianna DeLorenzo allowed four runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.
• Rozalee Negron picked up two hits with a run scored and RBI.
• Bridgit Shields collected a pair of hits and scored a run.,
• Ellie Egher finished 2-4 with a run and an RBI.

News and Notes
• The win in game one clinches a spot in the CACC Tournament for the Lions. 
Kaitlyn Stufft has tied the Georgian Court all-time RBI record with 185.
Adriana Mungo's triple is her 14th and moves her into sole possession of second all-time at GCU.
Julia Lapp's four strikeouts are a new single-game high.
• Georgian Court had won 12 straight games over Jefferson after their game one win. That win streak was snapped and the Rams picked up their first win over GCU since 2017. 

Up Next
• The regular season comes to a close for Georgian Court tomorrow afternoon. The Lions head to Philadelphia to take on Holy Family for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
