LAKEWOOD, NJ (April 9, 2024) - Georgian Court Women's Lacrosse picked up their best win of the season Wednesday afternoon. The Lions took on an undefeated in CACC play Wilmington team who were 5-0 and stood their ground. The game was tied at half and after three, but GCU outscored Wilmington 5-1 in the fourth to pull away with a 12-8 win. GCU now stands at 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the CACC.
How it Happened
• In a defensive game it came down to a lot of little things and Georgian Court was the better team on this day. Although Wilmington won the draw control battle 13-11, GCU forced 19 turnovers and limited Wilmington to just 13-19 on clear attempts.
• The Lions turned the ball over 15 times themselves and were 19-23 on clears.
• Shot totals greatly favored the Lions as GCU's defense made life difficult for the Wilmington offense. The Lions led in shots 38-23 and shots on goal 23-13.
• Wilmington kept the game close with the help of their goaltender who made 11 saves. GCU only needed to make five stops in net.
• Each team picked up 28 ground balls.
First Quarter
• It took nearly seven minutes for the first goal of the game. Wilmington goaltender Katie Vindigni made two early stops to keep the Lions off the board.
• After turning the ball over three times in the first four minutes, Wilmington finally cashed in. They scored off of a turnover for a 1-0 lead.
• The lead lasted just 14 seconds though.
Riley O'Connor won the draw control and found
Bryleigh Tejchman who quickly evened things at one.
• Wilmington responded going back on top just 41 seconds later and made it 3-1 just past the five minute mark.
•
Michaela Scirrotto drew GCU closer, but Wilmington made it a two goal lead after one, 4-2.
Second Quarter
• Late in the first Wilmington took two yellow cards that carried over into the second. Not only did they kill off both penalties, they scored down an attacker, making it 5-2 with 13:25 left before the half.
• That was the last time Wilmington scored in the quarter. One minute later, GCU made it 5-3 on O'Connor's free-position goal. Less than a minute after that, it was a one-goal game, 5-4, after
Remi Reinhardt scored a woman-goal goal.
• It stayed 5-4 for nearly nine minutes of action.
Isabel Raimondi tied the game after
Kelsey Naclerio caused a turnover and the half ended 5-5.Â
Third Quarter
• Wilmington shot out of the gate in the third scoring just 16 seconds into the half.
• They made it 7-5 with less than eight minutes to play as the Lions offense struggled to find the back of the net.
• A foul gave Raimondi a free-position attempt and she cashed in making it 7-6 with 6:54 left in the third.
• The Wildcats took another penalty and GCU was there for another power play goal as
Michaela Scirrotto found space and scored, tying the game at seven with 2:35 left in the period, which is how the frame ended.
Fourth Quarter
• It was the Lions turn to finally get going quickly to start a quarter.
Remi Reinhardt, as she often has this year, scored another big goal for the Lions, giving them their first lead, 8-7, with 13:34 left in the game.
• GCU made it a two-goal lead 1:19 later as Tejchman scored her second of the game.
• Wilmington was able to cut the lead in half following a GCU turnover and it stayed a one-goal game until nearly six minutes left to play.
• Gentile made a big save on a Wildcat shot and the Lions were off and running the other way. Raimondi found O'Connor who buried the shot putting the Lions back up two, 10-8, with 6:10 left.
• On the other end, Wilmington had two attempts at the net, hitting the post and then missing high from point-blank range. The Lions carried the ball up the field and with the shot clock about to expire O'Connor scored again as GCU led 11-8.
• Raimondi put the exclamation point on the win with her third goal with 27 seconds left and GCU walked about with the 12-8 win.
