Men's Soccer Turned Away by Staten Island

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 16, 2024) - Georgian Court Men's Soccer played with just 10 for much of the game and after getting on top 1-0, allowed three unanswered goals in a 3-1 loss to the College of Staten Island. The loss puts GCU at 0-3-1 ahead of the start of CACC play.

How it Happened
• Despite GCU being down a player for roughly 50 minutes, possession numbers were still roughly even as the Dolphins held a 54-46% on the ball.
• With the ball, Georgian Court was in the offensive zone 58% while when CSI held the ball, they were in the offensive zone 62%.
• Georgian Court led in shots, 16-11, with most of those coming in the second half. They totaled 16 to the Dolphins 11, 12 of the Lions shots in the final 45.
• CSI earned more corner kicks, 7-4.
• The Dolphins were whistled for 13 fouls and two yellow cards. The Lions were booked with four yellow cards and one straight red card while called for seven fouls.
• For the second straight game, the Lions scored early. Tim Wilk won a challenge at midfield where Sebastian Derflinger was to collect the ball. He passed up the middle to Gijs van Eif who got behind the defense and beat the keeper one-on-one for a 1-0 lead 11 minutes in.
• Immediately after, the Lions kept the offense rolling getting two more shots at the net.
• The Dolphins were on the attack earned three straight corner kicks. With a bit over 15 minutes left in the half, a pass into the box seemed harmless, but the Lions couldn't clear and that gave Brendan Maguire a shot from right to left that tied the game.
• There was only two more shots over the final 16 minutes, but the game turned on a straight red card to the Lions Vitor Turnes. He was forced the leave the game and the Lions had to play with 10 the rest of the. The half ended 1-1, but momentum was favoring the Dolphins.
• GCU had two early shots that Dolphin goalkeeper Justin Karaburan was on top of. Just about eight minutes into the half, CSI took their first lead. The Dolphins sent the ball in deep into the Lions. A cross into the box found a Lion defender, but a mishit on a clear attempt went to Brian Kerilu who didn't miss from the top of the box and gave the Dolphins a lead.
• Five minutes later, the Dolphins made it a 3-1 game. On a free kick from 30 yards out, Peterson Larose, perfectly placed it in the upper right hand corner of the goal past an outstretched Sotirios Gkosdis.
• Now with a 3-1 lead, the Dolphins sat back and tried to play keepaway. That gave the Lions a handful of late opportunities, but GCU couldn't capitalize. Van Eif again found himself one-on-one with Karaburan, but this time the goalie got a hand on van Eif's low shot to knock it away.
• GCU took two more shots on goal in the final five minutes and Karaburan was up to take on both, keep everything in front of him to preserve the 3-1 win.

• Gijs van Eif scored on five shot attempts.
Alessandro Cavallini took three shots, two on target.
Sebastian Derflinger played all 90 minutes and picked up an assist.
Sotirios Gkosdis made three saves in goal.

For the Dolphins
• Justin Karaburan got the win making six saves in net.
• Brendan Maguire scored on three shot attempts.
• Bran Kerilu and Peterson Larose scored as well.
• Bader Mesrar had an assist on two shots.

News and Notes
Sotirios Gkosdis recorded his 100th career save. Just the fifth Lion to ever reach that number. 
Oscar Jannesson played in his 40th career game and Alessandro Cavallini his 20th.
• This was the first ever meeting between the Lions and the Dolphins.

• Georgian Court has as short repreive. They're back on the pitch Wednesday, Sept. 18 for their first CACC game of the season at Jefferson. Kick off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
