LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 21, 2024) - After winning two thrilling five-set matches this week, Georgian Court Volleyball showed some fatigue Saturday afternoon against New Haven. The Lions got behind early and were unable to recover in a 3-0 loss to the Chargers. GCU falls below .500 for the season at 3-4.
How it Happened
• New Haven hit .284 for the match while the Lions were below .100 hitting just .059.
• The Lions hit 20 attack errors, eight of which were Charger blocks. The Lions also put back eight blocks.
• GCU landed four aces to New Haven's three. They also hit six errors and UNH just four.
Set 1
• New Haven never trailed in the opening set. They took an early 4-1 lead and never looked back.
• It didn't take long for UNH to grab a 10-point lead, 15-5.
• The Chargers were in control, though GCU did make it a bit interesting late. Down 23-9, the Lions scored six straight and forced a New Haven timeout.
• Back-to-back blocks ended the set for the Chargers, 25-15.
Set 2
• The second set was close at the outset, tied at five-apiece.
• The Chargers answered with four straight points to take a lead, 9-5.
• Georgian Court continually clawed back, but could only get as close at one on a handful of occasions.
• UNH was up 15-14 when they finished the set on a 10-4 run to take the frame and a 2-0 lead.
Set 3
• After getting down early, the Lions scored four straight for a 5-3 advantage.
• Retied back at seven, UNH scored 10 straight for a 10-7 lead.
• They took over from that point, going on to sweep with a 25-16 set three win.

Giorgia Cappelletti finished with six kills and eight digs.

Nylene Mateo landed six kills as well.
•
Martina Croce totaled 10 points with five kills and six blocks and two aces.
•
Carmen Rivera led GCU with 16 digs.
•
Dayna Diaz passed out 15 assists.
For the Chargers
• Grace Juergens picked up a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs.
• Macy Brown finished with a double-double as well, 12 kills and 13 digs.
• Tori Borton paced the offense with 24 assists.
• Payton Malinoski grabbed 14 digs.

• New Haven continues their success over the Lions. They're now 10-1 and have won nine straight.
• The Chargers have made their way through the CACC of late with sweeps of Bridgeport, Jefferson and now Georgian Court.
