Men's Soccer Blanked in Season Opening Loss

COLCHESTER, VT (Sept. 5, 2024) - Georgian Court Men's Soccer suffered a setback in their season opener. The Lions let up a first-half goal to Saint Michael's and the Knights made it hold up in the 1-0 win. 

How it Happened
• Shots were even in this one with the Knights holding a slight 12-11 lead. 
• After taking just three shots in the first half, the Lions managed eight in the second, but only three on target and all stopped.
• Each team earned five total corner kicks.
• Saint Michael's was called for 20 fouls while the Lions whistled just 11 times. Each team was issued two yellow cards each, all in the second half.
• Goaltender Ayendi Batista was tested early making a save in the fourth minute.
• Georgian Court responded with a shot of their own 30 seconds later, but Gijs van Eif's attempted missed wide.
• Saint Michael's broke the scoreless tie in the 19th minute as Jack Andrews took a feed from Muntasir Ahmed and buried it for a 1-0 lead.
• Georgian Court managed just one more shot the rest of the half and the Knights led 1-0 after 45 minutes.
Mikey Mallon started the second with a pair of shots and Robbie Tapp added a third  but SMC goalkeeper Garrett Smith stopped all three.
• The Lions continued to pepper the net in the second half, but were unable to come up with the equalizer. 
• With less than five minutes to play, the Lions earned three corner kicks but a van Eif wide attempt was the only shot the Lions could generate.

Ayendi Batista made four stops in goal.
• Gijs van Eif led GCU with three shots.
Mikey Mallon attempted two, both on net.

For the Knights
• Garrett Smith pitched a shutout making five saves in goal.
• Jack Andrews scored the lone goal for SMC on three shots.
• Muntasir Ahmed added an assist.

News and Notes
Ryan Lee played in his 50th career game.
• This was the first ever game between the Lions and Knights.
