Volleyball Drops South Division Clash to Goldey-Beacom

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Oct. 1, 2025) - Georgian Court Volleyball played another CACC South Division foe Wednesday night in Lakewood. The Lions had a hard time stopping the high-powered offense of Goldey-Beacom and fell in straight sets, 25-18, 25-18, 25-17. GCU is now 1-2 in CACC play.

How it Happened
• Goldey-Beacom's hitters were terrific hitting .366 for the night with 44 kills against just 10 errors.
• The Lions hit .107 with 18 errors to just 29 kills.
• Both teams hit eight service aces. Goldey-Beacom totaled six service errors to the Lions four.
• The Lightning doubled up GCU blocking eight attacks while the Lions put back four.

Set 1
• Georgian Court scored the first point of the match on a kill from Genesis Simanca, but Goldey-Beacom followed that with eight of the next nine points for an 8-2 lead.
• The Lightning went up seven, 12-5, when GCU rallied for four straight, getting two Kyla Davis kills and two Lightning attack errors.
• GBC responded though scoring eight straight. They landed six kills, five from Giuliana Jaku, and two service aces for their largest lead, 20-9.
• Georgian Court finished scoring seven of the final 11 points, but it was too late and a GCU service error handed the Lightning set one.
Set 2
• After some back-and-forth at the start, a 6-2 Lightning run put them up five, 11-6.
• Georgian Court responded with five straight. Iciar Zayas hit consecutive service aces and Ava Churnesky had a pair of kills during the stretch to tie the set at 11.
• Goldey-Beacom though proved to be very tough when on the serve. After they got the ball back, they went on another extended run, 7-1, to go up 18-12.
• The teams then traded points for a bit until GBC scored two kills and an ace to end the set once again, 25-18.
Set 3
• Similar to set one, the Lightning took an early lead. They scored five straight to turn a 4-3 lead into a 9-3 lead.
• Georgian Court was never really able to recover. The closest they got back was 11-8.
• Goldey-Beacom then hung four straight and the teams just traded points the rest of the way until GBC hit 25 for a three-set sweep.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Ava Churnesky hit .250 with 12 kills. She was a perfect 22-22 on serve reception.
• Iciar Zayas passed out 20 assists and landed three aces. She also picked up seven digs.
• Carmen Rivera led GCU with 15 digs.
• Emma Gildea scored three kills and three blocks.

For the Lightning
• Giuliana Jaku hit .414 with a game-high 15 kills.
• Gaby Fernandez was 16-16 on serve reception and grabbed a game-high 17 digs.
• Juliana Malena passed out 36 assists and finished with 12 digs for a double-double.

News and Notes
• The Lightning win snaps a 12-game GCU winning streak against Goldey-Beacom. Their last win over the Lions came back in 2017.
• Carmen Rivera has matched Nylene Mateo for 10th all-time at GCU in career digs.
• Goldey-Beacom's .366 attack percentage is the highest an opponent has hit against GCU this season.

Up Next
• Georgian Court plays Bridgeport this Saturday, Oct. 4 at home for Homecoming. For the first time in a while, the Lions will not be kicking off Homecoming, but closing out the festivities. First serve is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
