Lions Win Overtime Thriller in Season Opener

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Feb. 15, 2025) - If the rest of the season is anything like game one, Georgian Court Women's Lacrosse is in for a fun ride this season. Georgian Court got up late in the second half, only to see it all disappear as overtime was needed in their season opener against Molloy. In the first overtime period, GCU scored the golden goal to prevail 13-12 in a wild debut to the 2025 campaign.

How it Happened
• The game featured six total ties, three in each half.
• Molloy led in total shots 33-19.
• Georgian Court kept Molloy in the game giving the ball away 18 times. They forced just 10 themselves.
• Draw controls were near even with Georgian Court winning one more, 14-13.
• Molloy was quicker on the ground though scooping 25 groundballs to GCU's 14.
• Molloy was issued four cards and Georgian Court two. Each team scored once with the extra attacker.
1st Quarter
• Georgian Court struck first. Isabel Raimondi scored on a feed from Sophia Raimondi just over three minutes in.
• The score stayed 1-0 for a while. GCU made it 2-0 when Emily Smith scored on a free-position shot.
• Molloy finished the period hot though. They scored four in the final 5:30, three coming from Megan Rugolo. The final was a free-position goal as a foul was called with just one second remaining in the quarter and Molloy led 4-2 after one.
2nd Quarter
• Georgian Court's defense held strong in the second, allowing just two goals.
• GCU quickly tied things on consecutive goals from Gabrielle Battle from Isabel Raimondi assists.
• A minute later, Caitlin Petrellese untied it with a free-position goal to give GCU the lead back.
• Molloy scored twice with less than five to play, going back up, 6-5, including once playing shorthanded.
• This time was it Georgian Court's turn to score late as Sophia Raimondi took advantage of the power play to score with 38 second left and tied the game at six at the half.
3rd Quarter
• GCU nearly pitched a third quarter shutout.
• They scored four unanswered and took a 10-6 lead.
• Petrellese scored twice while Isabel Raimondi and Jill Konschak added the others.
• For the second time in three quarters Molloy was able to beat the buzzer. They got one back on another free position shot as time expired to cut the lead to 10-7 after three.
4th Quarter
• That goal sparked Molloy, but it wasn't until after Georgian Court freshman Nena Menard scored to open the fourth.
• Once again trailing by four, Molloy rattled off four straight to tie at 11.
• Menard again scored with 3:22 to play to give the Lions the lead back, but Molloy answered less than a minute later, tying at 12.
• Georgian Court won the ensuing draw, but turned the ball over before getting a shot off.
• Molloy was able to hold for the shot and Cadence Gentile came up with a save to send the game to over time.
OT1
• With a fresh three minutes for overtime, Molloy won the draw and had first crack to end the game.
• Gentile again came up big with a huge save to keep the game tied and give GCU possession.
• With time winding down, Petrellese was fouled and sent to the line for a free position shot. She didn't miss scoring her fourth goal and sending the home team home happy with with a 13-12 win.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Isabel Raimondi totaled seven points with two goals and five assists.
• Caitlin Petrellese scored four times and won seven draw controls.
• Nena Menard and Gabrielle Battle each scored twice.
• Sophia Raimondi had a goal and an assist.
• Cadence Gentile made nine saves for the win in net.

For Molloy
• Megan Rugolo scored a game-high five goals and won six draws.
• Alexa Amorison dished out three assists.
• Sofia Quitoni scored a goal and forced three turnovers. 
• Nicole Schaumloffel made three saves and grabbed five ground balls.

News and Notes
• Caitlin Petrellese scored her 25th career goal and her four are a new single-game high.
• GCU takes the series lead 3-2 in the battle of Lions over Molloy.
• Isabel Raimondi surpassed 250 career points.
• This was the Lions first overtime game since an 11-10 loss to Shippensburg in 2018.
