Softball Swept by Spartans

SPARKILL, NY (March 14, 2025) - Georgian Court Softball was back in the tri-state area, playing their only doubleheader of the weekend Friday afternoon. GCU traveled to take on St. Thomas Aquinas where the hosts swept the Lions, 9-1 (5 innings) in game one and 5-0 in game two.

Game 1 - St. Thomas Aquinas 9, Georgian Court 1 - 5 Innings
How it Happened

• St. Thomas Aquinas showed their muscle with five extra base hits including three home runs.
• The Lions helped out the Spartans making two fielding errors leading to four unearned runs.
• STAC also played small ball with two stolen bases and a sacrifice hit.
• GCU surrounded a one-out single with three strikeouts in the first inning.
• The Spartans took a big lead just four batters into their lineup as Sofia Marella homered to right to put STAC up 3-0.
• The Lions matched STAC with a home run of their own the very next innings. Cheyenne Jackson hit a solo shot to pull GCU within two a 3-1.
• STAC took advantage of a pair of Lion errors to score four unearned runs in the bottom of the inning. The biggest hit again came from Marella who launched her second home run in as many innings, putting the Spartans up 7-1.
• The Spartans tacked on two more in the third on their third home run of the game. This one came from Trinadey Santiago and extended the Spartan lead to 9-1.
• Georgian Court managed just one more hit the rest of the way and the game ended after five innings, 9-1.

Lion Stat Leaders
• Cheyenne Jackson reached base twice with a home run and a double.
• Kaylin Curro and Mikayla LaPlaca finished 1-2 each.

For the Spartans
• Sofia Marella homered twice in a 2-3 day with five runs batted in.
• Maristella Coira reached base three times with a walk, single and triple and scored twice.
• Adrian Coira doubled and scored two runs.
• Trinadey Santiago homered and drove in a pair.
• Sarah Clancy got the win in the circle tossing all five innings allowing a run on four hits with four strikeouts.

Game 2 - St. Thomas Aquinas 5, Georgian Court 0
How it Happened

• GCU scattered seven hits, but couldn't push a run across.
• STAC managed 10 hits, nine singles.
• The Lions again made some costly errors in the field. Three errors led to three unearned runs.
• Georgian Court put runners on base, but stranded nine. The Spartans left eight runners on. 
• STAC started game two where they left off in game one. They weren't using the long ball so much, but putting plenty of runners on base.
• Three singles produced the first run before a costly two-out error scored two more and STAC led 3-0 after one.
• The Spartans tacked on in the second and third with a run apiece on RBI singles for a 5-0 lead.
• Julia Lapp settled down and threw three scoreless innings to finish the game, but Georgian Court was unable to push any runs across in the 5-0 loss. 

Lion Stat Leaders
• Ella Moore doubled twice in four at bats.
• Gabriella Aleman singled twice.
• Kaylin Curro reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
• Julia Lapp threw all six innings allowing five runs (two earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts.

For the Spartans
• Madison Puppolo tossed a seven-hit shutout striking out two and walking one.
• Adriana Coira was 2-3 with a run scored and a triple.
• Eliana Raposo singled twice, drove in a run and scored. 

News and Notes
• This is the first time St. Thomas Aquinas has ever swept the Lions in a doubleheader.
• After not homering last season, Cheyenne Jackson has two in her last four.
• Georgian Court pitching walked just two, their fewest in a doubleheader this season.
