Men's Soccer Wraps Up Week at Staten Island

LAKEWOOD, NJ (Sept. 11, 2024) - Georgian Court Men's Soccer remains on the road as they finish up this week in New York. It's the second game GCU has played in the Empire State this week.

Previously vs. Staten Island
• These two teams met for the first time in their history last season.
• For the second consecutive game, GCU got on the board early, but couldn't hold the lead in a 3-1 loss to the Dolphins.
Gijs van Eif scored for GCU with Sebastian Derflinger picking up the assist.

Last Time Out
• Georgian Court finally played their second game of the season after their game with Bentley was halted due to lightning and could not be resumed.
• GCU was up in Sparkill taking on St. Thomas Aquinas.
• Van Eif gave the Lions a lead in the first half on a very heady play as he used his head to loft a ball over the keeper who vacated the net.
• The Spartans got the goal back roughly 10 minutes later and that was it for the scoring in the 1-1 draw.
Sotirios Gkosdis made nine saves in goal. He also had the assist on van Eif's goal. 

Individual Milestones
• Mikey Mallon will get to 40 starts with one more. He's also two points away from 20. One more assist will bring him to a tie for second all-time in career assists. 
• Jack Pollintine-Smith is two points away from reaching 10.
Gijs van Eif is one goal away from 20 in his career. 
• David Tuschmann's next goal scored will be his 10th and he'd be the 11th Lion to reach double-figure career goals. 
Sotirios Gkosdis is just six saves away from moving to second all-time at GCU in career saves.

CACC Stat Leaders
• Georgian Court is second in Division II with 8.5 saves per game.
• Sotirios Gkosdis leads the country with nine saves per game and Ayendi Batista is fourth with eight.
Gijs van Eif sits second in the CACC in shots per game with four. 

Brand New Starters
• Georgian Court graduated a lot of experience after 2024. 
• Of the 200 starts from field players in 2024, they get only 94 back from eight players who made starts in the field.
• The Lions are bringing back leading goal scorer Gijs van Eif and leading assist-man Mikey Mallon who were both named to the All-CACC Team.
• The defense will be helped out by the returns of Oscar Jannesson and Alessandro Cavallini.
• In net, GCU has experience on their side with both Sotirios Gkosdis and Ayendi Batista back in the fold who have a combined 37 career starts in goal.
• The first two games saw Yanis Achouri Leo ElderAnthony RyanSander Rynning, Bryan Sanchez and Jelte Van Hesteren all make their first career starts. 

Scheduling Quirk
• All season long the Lions don't play more than two straight games at home or more than two straight on the road.

New York State of Mind
• This will be the Lions 22nd game as a visitor to an opponent from the state of New York.
• All-time, GCU is 8-10-3 in the first 21 games.
• This is Georgian Court's first trip to Staten Island.

About Staten Island
• Staten Island has dropped their first two games of the season in 2025 following a 2-12-1 2024 year. 
• In their season opener, two late goals broke a 1-1 tie in a 3-1 loss at Assumption. They then allowed an early tally in a 1-0 loss at Saint Anselm.
• Koray Arslan has the only goal of the season thus far for the Dolphins.
• Like GCU, they've started a different goaltender in each game. Each have made four saves. Carlos Romero Astacio allowed one goal to Saint Anselm.
• The Dolphins are averaging 12 shots per game with seven shots per game on net. Despite being outshot 32-24, they're up on their opponents 14-12 in shots on goal.
