Another Five-Set Win For Georgian Court on Day Two of ESU Tournament

EAST STROUDSBURG, PA (Sept. 20, 2025) - Starting day two of the East Stroudsburg Tournament, Georgian Court survived a thrilling five-set match for their third win of the season. The Lions defeated Southern New Hampshire in their first game of the day. 

How it Happened
• Georgian Court scored 58 kills and were helped out by 11 service aces.
• The Penmen led in blocks, 11-6, five coming in set one.
• GCU hit .141 for the match while SNHU was at .084.
1st Set
• The teams were going back-and-forth to start the game.
• Tied at 12, the Lions pulled ahead with a 7-1 run and took their largest lead, 19-13. Brooke Bowbliss had a pair of kills during the run.
• The Penmen were never able to get back into the frame and a Genesis Simanca ace gave the Lions a 1-0 lead.
2nd Set
• SNHU scored the first two points in set two and led end-to-end.
• The pushed the lead to 10-5 following a Lion service error and a kill.
• The Penmen continued to distance themselves and evened things up with a 25-18 set two win.
3rd Set
• The third set was all Lions. They raced out to an 11-3 lead.
• Consecutive Penmen attack errors gave the Lions a 10-point lead, 16-6.
• The two teams traded points the rest of the way which was okay with GCU who took a 2-1 lead with a 25-16 win following kills from Addison Wellington and Ava Churnesky.
4th Set
• Georgian Court nearly pulled off a comeback in the following set to win in four, but SNHU was able to hold off a late Lions rally.
• The Penmen took a 16-9 lead before the Lions rattled off four straight to get to within three, 16-13. Carmen Rivera had a pair of service aces.
• Trailing 21-15, GCU again got to within three, 21-18. Facing set point, 24-19, the Lions scored three straight and made it a two-point game, 24-22, but a Penmen kill ended the rally and the set, 25-22.
5th Set
• It looked like Georgian Court would cruise to a win in set five, scoring the first six points, but that wasn't the case.
• SNHU went on a 10-2 run and took a lead of their own, 10-8.
• Still trailing by two, 11-9, Georgian Court scored four straight to reclaim a 13-11 lead.
Amber Gallo finished off the match with a service ace and Georgian Court survived for the five-set win.

Lion Stat Leaders
Genesis Simanca hit 16 kills with nine digs.
Brooke Bowbliss flirted with a triple-double passing out 20 assists with 12 digs and seven kills.
Addison Wellington scored nine kills.
Carmen Rivera picked up 29 digs.
Iciar Zayas passed out 25 assists.

For the Penmen
• Sophie Chevalier finished with a game-high 17 kills on 51 attempts.
• Ariana Davila dished out 32 assists with 13 digs.
• Alexandra Friebolin chipped in seven kills.
• Brooke Vaughan had a team-high 16 digs.

News and Notes
• After starting the year with six straight three-set matches, Georgian Court has now played three straight five-set matches.
Brooke Bowbliss saw her most action of the season and had season-highs in assists, digs, blocks and kills.
Carmen Rivera had a season-high 29 assists, one off of her career-best.

Up Next
• Following this weekend, the Lions get back into CACC action next week as they play at Chestnut Hill Tuesday, Sept. 23. Game time is 7 pm.
